X8L Range Delivers High-Capacitance Values At 150C

AVX has brought out X8L dielectric multilayer ceramic capacitors, which deliver high-capacitance values at temperatures of up to 150C. The new parts extend AVX's high-temperature MLCC range: previously available X8R dielectric parts are also rated for use at similarly high temperatures and are stable with temperature, but do not offer the same high-capacitance performance at elevated temperatures.

X8R and X8L MLCCs are RoHS-compliant and feature excellent low-loss performance and good-temperature stability - X8R devices exhibit a capacitance variation over temperature of +/-15 per cent between -55C and +150C, while X8L products have a variation of +/-15 per cent between -55 to +125C and +15/-40 per cent from +125 to +150C. Absolute capacitance will vary with temperature, but as an example, at ambient (25C) temperature the new X8L parts deliver a CV of 0.47uF/25V in an 0805 package, whereas the comparable X8R device is rated at 0.22uF/25V. X8L parts also extend the voltage available from 50V (X8R) to 100V.

Optional termination systems include AVX's Flexiterm, which resists damage caused by thermal cycling and mechanical flexing, ensuring the parts are reliable. Conductive epoxy terminations for hybrid applications are also available. The high-capacitance X8L MLCCs are AEC-Q200-qualified, which makes them suitable for automotive applications such as under-the-bonnet systems. In the industrial market, they can also be used as bulk capacitors for temperature-sensing modules and control units.
