One general trend in electronics is the integration of components and functions in one single integrated circuit. Laurent Dubos, Market Segment Director for Lighting at IPDiA, shows that not only active components can be part of an IC, but also several passive components can be integrated. He demonstrates that besides space savings, quality issues are also a hot topic that need to be looked at and are a reason to use this technology.

An LED driver is a power supply that matches the voltage and the current output to the electrical characteristics of an LED or array of LEDs. From an environmental point of view, some of the applications of these HB-LED modules are very demanding, with some specific constraints about the space requirements in the bulb replacement market.

It is a well known fact that standard passive devices take 70% of board space, when, at the same time, the need for embedded technologies with miniature chips is growing significantly.

Thanks to its unique high capacitance density (up to 250nF/mm²), IPDiA has launched a full range of Low Profile Silicon Capacitors (LPSC), with a thickness of 100μm, offering different sizes from the miniature 01005, 0201, 0402, 0603, 0805 and up to 1206.

Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ Global Select: ISIL) today announced the newest family of backlight LED drivers that can operate from the low input voltage of a single cell Li-ion battery. The ISL9769x series features ultra-low quiescent current and high efficiency required to maximize battery life in the latest generation of smartphones, tablets and Ultrabook/notebook PCs.

With a minimum input voltage of just 2.4V, and quiescent current of only 0.8mA, the new ISL97692/3/4A series of LED drivers makes the most of the limited capacity of Li-Ion batteries in portable devices. The ISL97692 incorporates four channels with up to 40mA each, while the ISL97693 and ISL97694A provide six channels with up to 30mA each. All the drivers feature output current phase shifting which maximizes efficiency during PWM dimming and increases the effective output current frequency to eliminate audible noise. Additionally, when operating from a single cell Li-Ion battery, the drivers do not require any input voltage other than the battery, reducing board size and component count.

Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ Global Select: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog and mixed signal semiconductors, today expanded its family of radiation hardened op amps with a quad precision version featuring the industry's best combination of low noise, low power consumption, high precision and high DC accuracy. This product expands Intersil's radiation hardened op amp portfolio beyond the already released dual op amps, ISL70218SRH and ISL70227SRH, which have similar performance.

Ideal for applications such as sensor signal processing that demand high DC accuracy and AC performance, the ISL70417SEH contains four high precision amplifiers that feature low offset voltage, low bias current and low temperature drift. The ISL70417SEH operates over a wide voltage range up to 40V, supporting most analog and split supply requirements. Additionally, the ISL70417SEH's performance over radiation significantly increases incoming signal integrity because of minimal shifts in critical parameters that effect DC signal accuracy such as offset voltage, offset current and bias current.

International Rectifier, IR® (NYSE: IRF), a world leader in power management technology, today announced the introduction of the IR3588 CHiL® digital control IC and IR3552 and IR3548 single- and dual-phase PowIRstage™ devices, delivering the industry’s smallest solutions that meet Intel’s VR12.6 specifications for 15W and 25W Ultrabook™ laptop computers that significantly extend battery life.

IR’s IR3588 and optimized single-phase and dual-phase IR3552 and IR3548 PowIRstage devices reduce footprint by more than 50 percent compared to leading monolithic solutions and offer a 40 percent smaller footprint compared to alternative reference designs. Additionally, the IR solutions extend battery life as a result of the IR3588’s low quiescent current while offering lower operating current and sleep state power of less than 1mW, which exceeds Intel’s VR12.6 Ultrabook power specifications. Battery life is further enhanced with IR’s Regenerative Braking technique which returns energy to the battery that is normally lost when waking a laptop computer from a sleep state.

The IR3588 matched with the dual-phase IR3548 is optimized for high performance Ultrabooks up to 25W while the IR3588 paired with the single-phase IR3552 is designed for standard Ultrabooks up to 15W.

The IR3588 maintains full digital flexibility and telemetry and offers true-off capability for PS4. The device also offers clean ultrafast DVID Up and Down performance, lossless input current telemetry and supports up to 1.5MHz per phase.

The new PowIRstage devices integrate a low quiescent synchronous buck gate driver, and synchronous MOSFETs and Schottky diode into a compact PQFN package. The devices have an input range of 4.5V-16V and can be operated up to 1.5MHz, and true-off capability enabling the driver to shut off to minimize quiescent current.

The dual-phase IR3548 PowIRstage device supports up to 30A per phase and delivers up to 95 percent efficiency at 7.2Vnom to 1.8Vnom in a 6mm x 8mm PQFN package. The single-phase IR3552 supports up to 40A and offers 94 percent efficiency at 12Vnom to 1.8Vnom. in a 4mm x 6mm PQFN package.

International Rectifier, IR® (NYSE: IRF), a world leader in power management technology, today introduced a family of 600V insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) optimized for motor drive applications operating below 10kHz including compressors for refrigerators and air-conditioners.

IR’s latest generation Gen7 F devices employ punch-through Trench technology to deliver higher power density and the ability to optimize conduction and switching losses for a specific frequency of operation. The new IGBTs achieve very low VCE(ON) to improve efficiency with zero temperature coefficient for high efficiency across the entire operating range. The devices also offer smoother switching to reduce EMI and overshoots, and are short-circuit rated for motor drive applications.

The IRG7RC10FD and IRG7IC30FD are co-packaged with a soft recovery diode while the IRG7SC12F is a single IGBT that allows the designer to choose a specific diode for the application.

Two motor control reference designs featuring Gen 7 F IGBTs are available on request. The IRMDKG7-400W features the IRG7SC30FD DPAK IGBT and IRS2334S 3-phase HVIC driver for motors up to 400W. The IRMDKG7-600W features the IRG7SC30FD DPAK IGBT and IRS2334S 3-phase HVIC driver for motors up to 600W. Both reference designs include an optional heat-sink.

International Rectifier, IR® (NYSE: IRF), a world leader in power management technology, today introduced the automotive-qualified AUIRS20302S three-phase gate driver IC for 12V, 24V and 48V vehicle applications including high-voltage air conditioner compressors, pumps, BLDC motor drives up to 600W and high-voltage motor drives.

The AUIRS20302S targets 12V, 24V and 48V boardnet automotive platforms operating at voltages up to 200V maximum. The new device features an external pre-regulator to generate its own supply voltage to ensure that the gate drives do not exceed 17V even during load dump conditions. The pre-regulator VPR pin can also supply the surrounding system components if the total consumption does not exceed 100mA.

“With its comprehensive set of protection features and a pre-regulator to sustain load dumps, the AUIRS20302S is a robust 3-phase gate driver tailored specifically for car and truck applications ranging from 12V to 48V,” said Davide Giacomini, Product Marketing Director, IR’s Automotive Products Business Unit.

The AUIRS20302S is capable of driving 6 N-channel power MOSFETs or IGBTs using a bootstrap technique to supply the high-side driving circuitry. The device also features embedded deadtime and cross-conduction prevention functions and under-voltage and over-current protection with diagnostics.

Proprietary HVIC and latch immune CMOS technologies enable ruggedized monolithic construction. The logic input is compatible with standard CMOS or LSTTL outputs, down to 3.3V logic. The output driver features a high pulse current buffer stage designed for minimum driver cross-conduction. Propagation delays are matched to simplify use in high frequency applications.

IR's automotive grade IC products are subject to dynamic and static part average testing combined with 100 percent automated wafer level visual inspection as part of IR’s automotive quality initiative targeting zero defects. The devices are qualified according to AEC-Q100 standards, feature an environmentally friendly, lead-free and RoHS compliant bill of materials.

Interlink Electronics, Inc. With up to eight NAND flash channels and eight targets per channel, this backup operation can be performed with a write bandwidth of up to 1 GBps, depending on flash type and number of targets utilized. The 89HF08P08AG3 supports up to 32GB of DDR3 SDRAM, with configurable data rate from DDR3-800 through DDR3-1600. The new products are designed to facilitate the next generation of DRAM modules, including both registered dual inline memory modules (RDIMMs) and load-reduced DIMMs (LRDIMMs), to enable advancements in server and storage sub-system performance, scalability and power efficiency.

The IDT 4RCD0124 DDR4 register supports faster data rates and lower operating voltages, and it incorporates the major features required by DDR4 server-class memory modules. The device is fully backward-compatible with DDR3 systems and supports the current feature enhancements set forth by the Joint Electronic Device Engineering Council (JEDEC) for DDR4 systems.

Harvested energy is efficiently stored in a THINERGY MEC201-7S, which is a 4V, 0.7 mAh capacity rechargeable battery ideally suited for energy-harvesting applications. Efficient energy management is achieved by the MAX17710 PMIC, the industry’s first IC to integrate all of the power-management functions for ambient energy harvesting, charging, and protecting THINERGY MECs. Operating at an ultra-low current level measured in nanoamps, the MAX17710 accepts energy from a variety of poorly regulated energy harvesting sources with output levels ranging from 1µW to 100mW. Infinite Power Solutions, Inc. (IPS), a U.S. clean-technology company and global leader in manufacturing solid-state, rechargeable batteries, today announced it has been granted a key battery encapsulation patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). U.S. Pat. No. 8,236,443 entitled, “Metal Film Encapsulation,” represents an ultra-thin, flexible encapsulation with a hermetic seal for use in manufacturing long-lasting, solid-state, thin-film batteries (TFBs). This high performance metal film encapsulation provides a significant competitive advantage for the company and is already in use to produce its THINERGY® family of Micro-Energy Cell (MEC) products.

IPS’ first battery encapsulation patent, U.S. Pat No. 6,916,579 granted in 2005, was for the initial invention of a metal foil encapsulation for thin-film batteries. This second patent expands on the first, in part, by including a vertical conducting element that eliminates the need for peripheral current collectors as invented by Oak Ridge National Labs in the 1990s. Such peripheral current collectors are commonly used in other thin-film batteries and necessitate a larger footprint. IPS’ patented conductive feature in the vertical direction, combined with the metal film encapsulation as a current collector and terminal, maximizes the active area efficiency. This means more power and higher capacity per unit area than other TFBs. In addition, the metal film encapsulation is peripherally bonded to the cell’s metal foil substrate to form a tiny metal cage around the cell and, therefore, a hermetic seal. The dual purpose substrate layer (both substrate and bottom half of the cell encapsulation) reduces cost and materials, simplifies the design and minimizes cell thickness.

Conventional prismatic lithium ion batteries use a pouch style package where the cell substrate is in addition to the top and bottom metallized polymer foils forming the pouch (adding thickness), and the current collectors are peripheral to the cell (adding area). Other TFB encapsulations, such as polymeric and ceramic materials have been used by some developers but lack a sufficient moisture and oxygen barrier, a characteristic which is vital for a battery containing a metallic lithium anode. Such non-metallic encapsulations allow high moisture vapor and oxygen transmission rates resulting in cell degradation within months, even in low humidity environments. In contrast, the IPS metal film encapsulation provides cell protection for more than a decade.

A new, multi-function wireless valve actuator that can be integrated with building automation systems, through an existing building control gateway, will be available in the US and Canada on February 1, 2011, announced Jan Finlinson, President of ILLUMRA. The Wireless M3 Valve Actuator is designed for use on continuous closed-loop control systems and communicates based on EnOcean technology. ILLUMRA, the premier supplier of self-powered wireless lighting and HVAC controls in North America, is the exclusive distributor of the Wireless M3 Valve Actuator in the US and Canada.

The new wireless valve actuator is produced by Kieback & Peter, the 84-year old German-based, family-owned company. ILLUMRA, the leader in wireless battery-free controls, announced it has signed an exclusive agreement to sell the Probare P30 link analyzer in the United States and Canada. The new product allows specifiers and installers to plan, verify and maintain EnOcean based wireless networks. The hand-held analyzer is available in 315MHz and 868MHz versions.

The analyzer has four analyzer modes that test links, repeaters, and networks and also includes the ability to remotely control EnOcean based products. Power is supplied from two “AA” batteries. A wide-range AC power supply, including a USB plug, comes with the P30, which allows long-term logging of the radio channel, including: timing, signal strength, and packet data.

The P30 can communicate with PC's via USB. WinEtel and Dolphin View tools from EnOcean are supported for development engineers and field application experts. USB drivers are available for Windows, Linux and Mac OS-X.

ILLUMRA, the leader in innovative energy saving controls, announced the release of the CMR.The ILLUMRA CMR works with any Dawn/Dusk sensor to reduce energy consumption by 50% by shutting off lights during the second half of every night. One device is installed per pole or fixture to shut off lights not needed for maintaining safety lighting levels. The CMR automatically synchronizes to existing dawn/dusk sensors and adapts to changing seasons. The CMR limits peak demand inrush through sequenced start up.

Jiutai Energy (Zhungeer) Co. Ltd. has selected Honeywell’s UOP Methanol-to-Olefins (MTO) technology to convert methanol from coal into ethylene and propylene, building block materials used in the production of films, packaging, plastics and other petrochemicals.  Jiutai will produce 600,000 metric tons per year of ethylene and propylene at its facility in Ordos City, Inner Mongolia Province, China using process technology, catalysts, adsorbents, specialty equipment, technical services and training from Honeywell’s UOP. 

“UOP’s MTO process will allow Jiutai to use methanol derived from cheaper and abundant coal to maximize yields of high-value petrochemicals, reduce operating costs and expand its presence in China’s growing ethylene and propylene markets,” said Pete Piotrowski, senior vice president and general manager of Honeywell’s UOP Process Technology & Equipment business unit. “This project is another milestone for MTO technology and another example of how this technology can tap cheaper feedstocks such as coal and natural gas to meet the growing global demand for petrochemical products.”

Honeywell is working together with in-flight entertainment and connectivity supplier Thales to bring next generation global broadband connectivity to the world aviation industry.

The two aerospace companies are working to integrate the Honeywell-developed GX Aviation Ka band satcom avionics and antenna systems, operating over Inmarsat’s GX Aviation Ka-band satellite constellation, with Thales’ cabin network solutions. The combined offering will give commercial airline operators and their passengers four times the in-flight connectivity bandwidth.  This increased bandwidth will enable real-time TV channel viewing and social media connectivity, as well as virtual office functionality for video conferencing.

“Inmarsat’s GX Aviation Ka-band satellite connectivity system is a game changer and continues our tradition of providing the commercial aerospace market with innovative, proven and reliable products,” said Jack Jacobs, Vice President of Marketing for Honeywell Aerospace. “We expect that this connectivity system will provide airlines with significantly larger bandwidth at a cost-effective price.”

Honeywell has introduced a new black laminate film designed to help make black solar panels cooler and more efficient. PowerShield® Cool Black is a backsheet that helps reduce solar panel operating temperature by using an innovative and proprietary technology that reflects solar radiation. When panels operate at lower temperatures, their electrical components are able to operate more effectively and generate more power. Recently, all-black solar panels are increasingly being used on homes because they blend with rooftops.

Independent industry and university laboratory tests have shown that, during periods of peak power demand, solar panels using PowerShield Cool Black are as much as 7 degrees Celsius (12.6 degrees Fahrenheit) cooler, which can increase their power output by 2 to 3 percent. In turn, this increased power output can reduce a panel’s cost-per-watt generated by 2 to 3 percent.

“Heat reduction is a key factor in improving solar panel efficiency, and black panels are especially susceptible to increased temperatures,” said Jerry Buchanan, global business manager for Honeywell’s photovoltaic (PV) backing systems business. “Honeywell’s innovative new product, PowerShield Cool Black, can help keep black panels cool while making them more efficient, durable and able to blend in with their surroundings.”

Honeywell’s UOP will collaborate with Malaysia’s national oil and gas company, Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS), on natural gas processing technology. The joint development program is focused on technology to overcome challenges faced by producers of liquefied natural gas (LNG), as they seek to monetize natural gas more economically by moving gas processing from onshore facilities to ships that will moor closer to offshore gas fields.

The program will center on advanced carbon dioxide (CO2) absorption technology to improve the reliability of equipment used to remove contaminants from natural gas before it is liquefied, while also reducing the weight and footprint of the equipment onboard ships. Technical improvements developed to better meet LNG specifications may also be deployed in the next generation of onshore and offshore gas processing equipment.

Natural gas is the world’s fastest-growing fossil fuel, with annual consumption expected to reach 160 trillion cubic feet by 2035. Nearly 35 percent of the world’s demand growth for natural gas during that time will come from Asia, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

The HMC1033LP6GE and the HMC1035LP6GE expand the company's growing Clocks & Timing portfolio by offering programmable frequency synthesis from 25 MHz to 2.5 GHz in both integer and fractional relationships to their reference clocks. The HMC1033LP6GE is ideal for clocking DSP, FPGA and high performance processors as well as physical layer devices, and operates from 25 MHz to 550 MHz. Both products offer two modes of operation to trade off performance in favor of reduced power consumption. These two modes are defined as "Power Priority" and "Performance Priority" and may be selected via the SPI registers. In the "Power Priority" mode, the HMC1035LP6GE sources 173 mA typical current from the 3.3V supply with 2.5 GHz LVDS-compatible outputs, and in "Performance Priority" mode, the device achieves an integrated phase jitter performance of 100 fs RMS typical (12 kHz to 20 MHz integration bandwidth, 2.5GHz outputs), and improves interface Bit-Error-Rates (BER ) and eye diagram metrics. Both devices also produce an excellent 49-51% output duty cycle on their differential output.

The HMC1033LP6GE and the HMC1035LP6GE may be used to generate the sample clocks for high speed data converters (ADCs & DACs) in cellular infrastructure and fiber optic applications. With their very low phase noise floor, the clock generators improve the SNR (Signal-to-Noise-Ratio) performance of data converters by providing very clean sample and device clocks.

The HMC1033LP6GE and the HMC1035LP6GE are each assembled in 6 x 6 mm plastic leadless surface mount packages, and support operation over the -40 °C to +85 °C temperature range. Evaluation Kits with easy-to-use USB programming capability and GUI-based programming software to set the desired register configuration are available from Hittite.

The HMC1053 is a four stage GaAs pHEMT MMIC 5 Watt Power Amplifier with Power Detector which operates between 9 and 14 GHz. The HMC1053 provides 34 dB of gain, +43 dBm output IP3 and +38 dBm of saturated output power at 26% PAE from a +7V power supply. The HMC1053 exhibits excellent linearity and is optimized for high capacity point-to-point and point-to-multi-point radio systems.

These powerful amplifiers also feature I/Os that are internally matched to 50 Ohms and require no external matching components which makes them ideal for use as drivers, or as the final power stage in a microwave transmitter chain.

The HMC-C020, HMC-C021 and the HMC-C026 feature integrated voltage regulators which allow for flexible biasing of both the negative and positive supply pins, while internal bias sequencing circuitry assures robust operation.

Each of these lower cost hermetically sealed modules feature internally matched and internally DC blocked RF I/Os, making them ideal for both engineering laboratory and production screening test environments. The HMC-C059, HMC-C027, HMC-C020, HMC-C021 and the HMC-C026 offer a unique combination of performance, ruggedness and cost, and represent an outstanding value when compared to competing solutions.

Terokal 5010 TR, the two-component material being unveiled by Henkel at Automechanika, is an entirely new solution for the perfect repair of body damage – and far superior to hot soldering using tin. The product sold under the brandname Teroson was able to prove its practical performance capabilities during trials carried out in the “Allianz Zentrum fuer Technik”. 

For workshops, the use of Terokal 5010 TR offers significant time and labour savings. In contrast to working with tin, no high temperatures are required and the vehicle components do not have to be dismantled and then fitted again following the repairs. Neither is there any impact on the plastic components close to the repair, as the application and curing temperatures are no higher than if the vehicle was standing in bright sunlight.

In comparison to tin, Terokal 5010 TR furthermore boasts excellent processability and plasticity, even in areas of the body that are difficult to access. The product is applied at room temperature and subsequently cured using an infrared heat source at 60 to 80 degrees Celsius. In contrast to soldered repairs, which require much higher temperatures, with Terokal 5010 TR, paint and corrosion protection coatings around the repair remain intact.

Long processability, straightforward mixing
Terokal 5010 TR allows for easier moulding by the body specialist. With a long processability time of around 80 minutes, there is sufficient time to remould the site of the repair.

Mixing the two-component material is also extremely easy thanks to a special mixing nozzle that is used to apply Terokal 5010 TR. The two components are mixed automatically in the nozzle, thereby ensuring optimal use of the material.

Practical application suitability
Henkel’s innovation can be used on all metal surfaces of the vehicle body. In the “Allianz Zentrum fuer Technik”, the product was subjected to protracted trials, enabling verification of its practical application suitability. Having carried out their own tests, renowned automobile manufacturers are also convinced of its performance characteristics.

Terokal 5010 TR is extremely suitable for shaping and sanding after the repair work. It furthermore offers a good foundation for subsequent filling and painting. Terokal 5010 TR is available in two-component 175ml cartridges and is applied using standard manual cartridge guns (Staku).

Health and safety
For the workshop and its employees, Terokal 5010 TR is safer to use than tin. There are none of the hazards and discomforts associated with soldering, namely because a naked flame is not required.

Sealing mechanical components is made even easier with Loctite new silicone products, Henkel has unveiled at this year’s Automechanika in Frankfurt. The innovative premium silicones were developed to satisfy the highest demands in automotive repair shops.

Henkel is completing and optimising its silicone sealant line with two new products Loctite SI 5660 and Loctite SI 5990 in addition to the well-known Loctite SI 5980 Quick Gasket. The silicones can be used for sealing a variety of components on the vehicle, for example in the engine compartment they are used on the oil pan, water pump and valve covers. All three products adhere to both metals and plastics.

Henkel, the world’s largest manufacturer of adhesives, sealants and surface technologies, supplies the innovative products in a user-friendly ready-to-use cartridge developed especially for workshops. The sealant is applied from the pressurised cartridge through the integrated nozzle, without the need for an additional dispensing device.

Suitable for throughout the vehicle
Loctite SI 5980 Quick Gasket, a black silicone, is ideal for sealing areas that are in permanent contact with oil, for instance the oil pan, the differential housing cover and timing chain covers.

Loctite SI 5660, which is grey, is characterised by its extremely high resistance to glycol. This product is ideal for sealing thermostats and water pumps.

Loctite SI 5990, copper-coloured, is defined by excellent temperature resistance – up to 350°C (short-term resistance). It is primarily used on components that are subjected to high temperatures, for example to seal the turbocharger housing or to supplement the cylinder head gaskets.

Durable, robust and flexible
Like all silicones from the Loctite brand, which have proven their capabilities over decades, the new products offer outstanding long-term durability. On account of the product formulation, these silicones do not cause corrosion on the components, are flexible and are also extremely resistant to external stresses. They have good adhesive properties on different materials such as metals, coatings (e.g. cathodic dip paints), plastics, etc.

Moreover, the new flange sealant silicones offer good health and safety attributes. They are free from substances suspected of being hazardous to health (R40-free) and as a result do not carry any hazard symbols. Henkel thus satisfies rigorous demands of health and safety in the workplace – without compromising product performance.

The new Loctite flange sealant silicones are available in a ready-to-use 200ml cartridge. A technical data sheet including a detailed description of how the products should be applied is available.
