A typical channel for a high-speed network connection could start with zSFP+ (Small Form-factor Pluggable Plus) SMT I/O connectors receiving data (e.g., a signal) entering into the switch chassis. Enhanced zSFP+ 20-circuit connectors deliver superior performance in high-speed telecom and data communications equipment. Designed for 25 Gbps serial channels in high-speed Ethernet and Fibre Channel, the scalable Molex zSFP+ interconnects provide optimal EMI and signal integrity. The signal could next route to a motherboard through a SEARAY† board-to-board mezzanine connector.

Traveling at data rates of up to 25Gbps, the signal could pass through the midplane and daughtercard via Impact™ Orthogonal and EdgeLine® CoEdge connectors. Designed for a direct PCB connection, the Impact 100-Ohm orthogonal direct right-angle male connector and daughtercard system mitigates the performance constraints of backplane and midplane connections. The space-saving Impact technology supports high-speed 25 Gbps data rates and greatly reduces airflow restrictions, cross-talk, and capacitance constraints in high-speed channels. Impact connectors feature compliant-pin technology and the lowest mating force in the industry.

The EdgeLine CoEdge connector offers a low profile height interconnect solution that creates minimal wind resistance in an air-cooled chassis and an electrically optimized terminal to minimize noise for high speed transmissions in excess of 25Gbps. This scalable and cost-effective, one-piece EdgeLine connector allows designers to specify first-mate, last-break designations and shorter stubs for high-speed communications using a customizable card-edge interface.

As the signal exits the daughtercard, a zQSFP+ integrated cage and connector routes it through to a zQSFP+ breakout cable and into a router/switch. Supporting next-generation 100 Gbps Ethernet and 100 Gbps InfiniBand Enhanced Data Rate (EDR) applications, the Molex zQSFP+ interconnect solution provides 28 Gbps data rates for up to 4km with excellent thermal cooling, signal integrity, EMI protection and the lowest optical power consumption in the industry.

Once at the router, a NeoScale™ 28 Gbps mezzanine connector could direct the signal to the motherboard and into the backplane to another Impact solution, so the signal is delivered quickly and cleanly. One of the highest performing mezzanine connections on the market, the recently launched Molex NeoScale mezzanine connector features a unique and patent pending triad design to group signals into electrically optimized structures.

The triad design not only offers a designer flexibility in mixing and matching different triad configurations based on the needs for high speed differential pairs, high speed single-ended transmission, low speed control links and power requirements, but it also optimizes the channel electrically, helping to provide a very clean signal channel. The NeoScale connector’s PCB attach method comes in both Molex’s award winning Solder Charge™SMT attachment technology and the option for press-fit attach. The triads conform to a mirror image footprint to provide ease and flexibility of PCB routing in one or two PCB layers to minimize a designer’s PCB thickness, in turn decreasing PCB cost.

Molex Incorporated introduced today the MediSpec™ Hybrid Circular MT Cable and Receptacle System, an integrated optical and electrical solution that reduces the number of connectors required in medical equipment and devices. The multifunctional connector uses Molex’s circular MT optical connector and receptacle technology, providing three configurable MT ferrule compatible ports for a combination of copper or fiber media carrying electrical power, low speed copper signaling, optical data or video signals. This integrated technology may be incorporated into a custom solution to meet an end user’s specific requirements.

The MediSpec Hybrid Circular MT system, which will be on display at MD&M West, February 14-6, Anaheim, CA, booth 2074, offers a more streamlined approach to medical system design and is ideal for a variety of applications including robotic surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, diagnostic imaging, optical coherence tomography, guidance/illumination/navigation, interventional energy lasers and Picture Archival Communications.

Other features that make the MediSpec Hybrid Circular MT Connectors and Receptacles well-suited for medical systems include:

Molex Incorporated introduced today the first-to-market one-piece S8 Automotive Bulb Socket. This wedge-style bulb socket simplifies assembly and reduces inventory and component costs, while providing users with the same high-quality performance and robust design found in all Molex automotive sockets. The Molex S8 bulb socket also includes a unique individual wire seal design that provides easy attachment during the crimping process, along with superior sealing and usability.

“The S8 style of socket has been in use for over 10 years, with the standard design being a two-piece system comprised of a lamp socket pin module that accepts the bulb contact on one side and female plug housing on the other,” said EuiHwa Jung, global product manager, Molex. “Molex saw an opportunity to simplify the assembly process by developing the industry’s first one-piece S8 bulb socket, which provides multiple benefits over the competitive two-piece housing design.”

The bulb sockets, which are ideal for multiple transportation applications including turn signals, brake lights, positioning lights and backup lights, allow automotive OEMs to inventory just one socket, versus stocking alamp socket module and terminal housing. The product also streamlines the inventory process by providing one key type and color per assembly, versus different color pin modules, housings and key type assembly options. Additionally, the Molex S8 bulb socket design features a three-circuit housing to accommodate single or double filament bulbs for greater design flexibility and further reduced inventory needs. The bulb sockets meet industry-standard requirements and are SAE/USCAR-15 compliant.

Molex Incorporated today introduced the EXTreme Guardian™ header and cable solution for high-end servers in the computing and telecommunication markets. Recognized with the 2012 DesignVision Award in the Interconnect Technologies and Components category, this next generation solution features a three circuit, wire-to-board configuration that delivers up to 80 Amps of current per circuit, a PCB header with centerline spacing of 11.00 mm (0.433”) for increased PCB real estate savings and an EMI-shielding option to reduce cable crosstalk and improve immunity to external noise.

“Winning the prestigious DesignVision Award recognizes the innovation of the EXTreme Guardian solution. When developing the system, the Molex technical team focused on several critical requirements expressed by customers, including small package size, high amperage support and good shielding characteristics,” said Ken Stead, new product development manager, Molex. “By gaining a full understanding of these needs, we were able to develop a solution to meet all of the unique physical, mechanical and electrical specifications required by the end user.”

The EXTreme Guardian PCB header assembly reduces network downtime with a recessed, first-mate/last-break terminal that allows for hot-swapping of power units. The headers also include several unique design features, such as insert-molding for higher insert placement accuracy, integral screw threads on the header housing flange for easy and secure mating and locating pegs that enable accurate through-hole positioning of the connector.

The EXTreme Guardian cable assemblies are capable of handling up to 600 V, supporting high voltage with the lowest feasible voltage drop and I2R (irreversible dissipative power) losses. Other mechanical features of the cable solution include thumb-screws on the cable overmold that can withstand a minimum extraction force of 1.5 kgf (3.3 lb), a jacket-included strain-relief that can take a minimum pull force of 9.98 kgf (22 lb) in any direction and a secondary terminal lock to secure the cable from accidental pull out and disconnection.

The Han® 70 A Hybrid Module is the latest model in the Han-Modular® series – the highly flexible open connector system from HARTING. Applications also requiring power supply and signal contacts are now possible with the Hybrid Module, with smaller and more economical connectors.

The Han® 70 A Hybrid Module has a power contact for ampacity of 70 A at a rated voltage of 1000 V and four additional signal contacts designed for up to 400 V. Standard Han® E crimp contacts with ampacity of 16 A are used for this.

The power contact has axial screw terminals. Cables measuring from 6 to 22 mm² (8-4 AWG) can be connected without using an expensive special tool. A secure and durable connection can be made with a regular 2.5 mm hexagon screwdriver.

The Han-Modular® series enables users to create their own “personal” connector to the desired configuration. Various modules are available for electrical, optical and gaseous signals and the range is constantly updated.

The new Ha-VIS RF-R500 from HARTING offers customers an extremely powerful and versatile RFID Reader. It makes the use of RFID technology – the automatic recognition of objects – possible, even in demanding industrial environments without line of sight. Several hundred objects can be captured automatically over distances up to 16m and immediately stored on an existing IT system e.g. SAP. Automatic capture minimizes possible sources of error, enabling the optimization of logistics processes, for example.

Tools and wagon maintenance management can also be simplified and accelerated, achieving considerable cost savings. The full benefits of the reader can be seen in the example of tracking wagons going into a maintenance shed. Protected by a robust aluminum housing with a protection category up to IP 64, the reader can also be used in harsh environments in sheds or by the tracks. 4 W transmission power and four antenna connections for each device deliver wide coverage at minimum cost, as long antenna cables can be added. The powerful processor and optimized software means that wagons traveling past quickly can be captured.

The new ready made-up high-speed transmission cables from HARTING are now available, extending the comprehensive ready-made cable product portfolio. These QSFP+ and SFP+ high-speed cables can achieve data transmission rates of up to 40 Gigabits/second. All pre-assembled cables meet specific product standards.

Various AWG cables are incorporated in the ready-made QSFP+ and SFP+ standard cables. The portfolio ranges from AWG 24 to AWG 30.. In addition to this, tailored customer solutions - e.g. with different cable, paddle card and pull tab options – can be produced on discussion with individual customers, and this also applies to fitting circuit boards with data storage units. With ready made-up products from HARTING, no further work is required in the field. Thanks to their high-grade materials, the cables are suitable for a wide range of applications, and are ideal for scenarios requiring high data transmission rates. Circuit boards are encapsulated, giving a high level of protection against interference. The fact that the QSFP+ connector is one of the shortest solutions on the market is another major benefit, enabling customers to fit a multitude of ready-made cables within a restricted space.

QSFP+ and SFP+ pre-assembled cables are a combination of high-grade HARTING connectors and high-performance cables.

The HARTING Technology Group presents the new space-saving angled RJ45 connector from the tried and tested HARTING RJ Industrial® series at SPS/IPC/DRIVES 2011 in Nuremberg. The 45° cable outlet can be mounted in four different directions. This gives users the option to achieve the right cable outlet direction with the same item number every time. The HARTING RJ Industrial® 10G angled offers maximum flexibility for a wide range of conductor and cable diameters when paired with existing tried and tested insulation displacement connection technology.

The insulation displacement terminations are fitted for flexible and rigid wires with profiles ranging from AWG 27/7 to AWG 22/1. Cables with a diameter of between 4.5mm and 8mm can be connected. Easy assembly without tools, secure and rapid connection and data transfer rates up to 1/10 Gbit Ethernet make the RJ Industrial® 10G twice as fast as previous versions. This robust and industry-compliant IP 20 version also has a compact design, making it multi-port capable. In addition to the IP 20 versions, all common IP 65/67 types from PushPull to Han® 3A are available with the RJ45 insert.

Master Bond Polymer System Supreme10HT/S is a uniquely formulated silver filled one component epoxy compound with an unsurpassed wide service temperature range from cryogenic service temperatures up to as high as 400°F. This remarkably versatile electrically conductive epoxy composition features high physical strength properties, superior chemical resistance and excellent durability even when exposed to various severe environmental conditions. Additionally it fully meets NASA low outgassing requirements.

Supreme 10HT/S has a shelf life of 3 months at ambient temperatures. The shelf life can be readily extended by storage at lower temperatures. No mixing is needed for use. Cure can be effected by heating at 250°F for approx. 1 hour or 300°F for 30 minutes, less at higher temperatures. A snap cure version called Supreme 10HTSF is available which will cure at 380-400°F in less than 2 minutes. Supreme 10HT/S has excellent bonding properties. Lap shear strengths with properly prepared substrates exceed 1800psi and peel strengths are impressively high. Master Bond Supreme 10HT/S has been acclaimed for outstanding resistance to thermal cycling, mechanical shock and vibration.

Combining superior physical strength and fast cure rates, Master Bond UV16 is formulated for demanding bonding, sealing, and coating applications. It is a one component, no mix system and cures in one minute or less at room temperature with commercial UV light sources.

This 100% reactive epoxy is uninhibited by oxygen and does not release any solvents or volatiles during the curing process. UV16 will cure in thicknesses up to 0.125 inches and has a 2% to 3% shrinkage rate, which is substantially lower than most free radical UV adhesives. Once cured, it delivers a tensile strength exceeding 4,100 psi and a Shore D hardness over 75. Post-curing UV16 at 90° to 125°C for 30 minutes gives the adhesive a glass transition temperature of 135°C and enhances its chemical resistance.

UV16 offers superior chemical resistance, especially against acids and solvents. After a three month immersion in 20% sulfuric acid, it exhibited less than a 3% weight gain. UV16 had a weight gain of less than 2% when immersed in 90% isopropyl alcohol for the same amount of time. With a volume resistivity of 1.6x109 megohm-cm, this epoxy also features excellent electrical insulation properties up to 300°F.

Master Bond UV16 has a viscosity of 200 to 400 cps and adheres well to a wide array of substrates, including plastics, glass, and many metals. A higher viscosity version called UV16TK is also available. UV16 has a 6 month shelf life in unopened containers and is available in syringes, half-pints, pints, quarts, gallons, and 5 gallon pails.

Developed for rigorous bonding and sealing in demanding manufacturing applications, Master Bond EP3HTSMed epoxy system features a rapid cure schedule and a tensile shear strength exceeding 1,000 psi. It is 100% reactive and fully meets USP Class VI requirements for medical applications.

This silver-filled epoxy adhesive/sealant has remarkable electrical conductivity with a volume resistivity less than 0.001 ohm cm. Serviceable over the wide temperature range of -60°F to 400°F, EP3HTSMed is resistant to severe thermal cycling and many chemicals including water, fuels, oil, and most organic solvents.

EP3HTSMed is a thixotropic paste and has a specific gravity of 2.90 at 77°F. It requires no mixing and needs only contact pressure during a simple heat cure of 20 to 40 minutes at 300°F or 40 to 90 minutes at 250°F. With minimal shrinkage during cure and a Shore D hardness of 60 to 80, EP3HTSMed bonds well to a variety of substrates including metals, glass, vulcanized rubbers, ceramics, and many plastics.

Silver in color, this one component adhesive is packaged in syringes or glass jars. EP3HTSMed has a shelf life of 6 months in a glass jar and a shelf life 3 months when stored in a syringe at room temperature.

Primarily used for testing the adhesion or cohesive strength of flame sprayed coatings as per the ASTM C633 specification, Master Bond EP15 produces high strength bonds across a wide variety of applications. This one component epoxy bonds well to many similar and dissimilar substrates. Particularly noteworthy is its adhesion to metals and ceramics.

Featuring a tensile strength exceeding 12,000 psi at room temperature, this 100% reactive system offers superior dimensional stability with minimal shrinkage upon cure. It is serviceable from -60°F to 250°F. EP15 has superior chemical resistance properties and withstands thermal cycling.

As a one part system, EP15 features an unlimited working life and does not require any mixing prior to use. This system offers good flow properties with a viscosity of 40,000-65,000 cps and can be easily applied with a brush, paint roller or spatula. It cures quickly in 60-90 minutes at 300-350°F.

The standard color for this epoxy is tan and it is available in many sizes, including 1/2 pint, pint, quart, gallon and 5 gallon containers. Master Bond EP15 has a minimum shelf life of 3 months when stored in original, unopened containers.

Typically, precision load cells are trimmed to reveal highest accuracy in a very specific capacity range. A newly developed weigh module provides reproducibly 1mg readability over a full 0 - 1200g capacity range. That allows for gravimetrical controlled filling of a large variety of filling capacities on the very same filling device.

The WMS weigh modules are specifically designed for the use in automated processes under industrial environmental conditions. Speed, ruggedness, precision and direct connectivity are the key features. The product range consists of 8 models from 120g with a readability of 0.1mg to 6kg with a readability of 0.01g. The WMS1203C covers a full capacity of 1200g with a reproducible readability of 1mg. It is the most often used weigh module for machines with the capability to fill very small and very big vials. Its large weighing range of 1200g allows for mounting of vial adapters onto the pan and still providing enough capacity to fill volumes from e.g. 5ml to 500ml.

Adaptable Software

With their extensive parameter sets, WMS weigh modules can be configured so that they are optimized for virtually any application and environment. A computer based software for parameterization, diagnostics, and data backup makes getting started easy. The RS232 interface has an update rate of 92 filtered and compensated weight values per second to control dosing processes in real time.

Designed for Automation

The 316L (1.4404) stainless steel housing with a molded seal consisting of FDA-compliant materials features flanges with threaded holes so that the weigh module can be attached appropriately. The rugged industrial plug connectors with IP67 protection ensure high levels of reliability and a long service life. The weighing pan has holes to fasten customized adapters. A patented locking device connects the pan to the weigh module. It allows fast change of pan for cleaning or different adapters for other formats.

IP66 for Cleaning

A double labyrinth design offers IP54 protection against penetration of dirt particles during production. The optional wash-down functionality, offers IP66 protection for efficient cleaning with fluids.

Floor scales are often exposed to shocks and impacts during loading. Weak design combined with insufficient measurement technology leads to unreliable measurement results and frequently to costly repair work. These issues can be eliminated, due to the innovative rocker pin technology -  the robust weighing platforms and the quality load cells.

Rocker pins allow the weighing platform to be moved laterally to its safety stops. This securely prevents any damage to the load cell due to lateral forces which might occur when loads are processed at full speed. Commercially available floor scales are not protected against these forces. Floor scales, which can be driven over and have screwed-in feet and a level contact surface (standard in the case of simple scales), transfer the forces directly to the load cell. On the one hand, this generates fluctuating and unreliable measurement values. On the other hand, load cells are loaded above their safety limits. This results in premature failure of the weighing platform. The rocker pins from METTLER TOLEDO ensure optimum force transmission to the load cell at all times. Any distortions, uneven floor conditions or lateral shearing forces are absorbed.

The design ensures optimum, lateral force transmission to the load cell. The rocker pins swing in all directions and thereby protect the load cell from damage due to lateral shocks or impacts.

For even more efficient protection and to guarantee the most accurate of measurement results, METTLER TOLEDO also offers solutions with installation frames. The scale is thus mechanically protected against lateral impacts e.g. from a forklift. This also ensures that the scale cannot be moved and always maintains a level position.

MASK Polymers is one of the leading manufacturers of rubber and Teflon products for the chemical and automobile industries in India. These customer industries have continuously increasing expectations regarding the quality of the parts they purchase. The standard operating procedures MASK had in place were not appropriate to economically achieve these markets requests.

The batch formulas for the different rubber qualities (150 recipes based on 500 components) were kept in a handwritten recipe book. Each day began with a handwritten daily production plan handed over to the mixing department. After a complete batch had been weighed according to the recipe book, it was forwarded to the kneader and after kneading was completed it was transferred to the mixing mill where rubber sheets according to desired composition were finally produced. The process was completely dependent on the skills set of the operator without any accountability leading to an unsatisfactorily high rate of batch rejection. Confronted with the increasing costs of quality and the difficulty to access new market, MASK saw the necessity to introduce a different batch formulation philosophy, based on semiautomatic operating procedures.

With the help of METTLER TOLEDO specialists, a concept was developed, taking into account the economical constraints, the precision in batch formulation, the harsh environment and the need for simplicity of operation.

A computer based production and recipe management system was introduced. The existing weighing equipment was connected to an IND690 terminal managing the communication with the central computer (batch orders are entered directly to the IND690) and the weighing equipment, and displaying clear instructions and targets to the operating personnel.

For this purpose the application package Form-XP was loaded to the IND690. The formulation reports are uploaded from the IND690 to the computer for inventory control, statistical evaluation, leading to new possibilities for procedures optimization. A significant reduction in the costs of batch rejection was rapidly achieved. The improved level of quality and the full traceability of each batch enabled MASK to introduce new product lines with complex recipes and higher requirements.

Critical messages from Tablex-PRO detectors can be communicated directly to key individuals within the manufacturing organisation via a unique GSM gateway communication system. This allows the detector so send instant SMS text messages and emails to the mobile telephones or in-boxes of those that need to know process information. Typically, maintenance engineers can receive early warnings regarding potential downtime or line stoppages while QA or Production Managers can be advised of over-due validation testing of the system which could lead to non-compliance issues and failed food safety audits if not addressed.

Sandvik Coromant launches an extension to its range of Silent Tools milling adaptors.

Available in lengths 4-5xD these new dampened adaptors can provide more than 50% productivity increases over undampened assemblies.

October 1st sees the launch of 3 new styles of inserts for the CoroMill 316 exchangeable head milling system.

On October 1st  Sandvik Coromant introduces a new full profile hob for gear milling, CoroMill 176.
This indexable carbide insert hob can reduce your cutting time by 50% and more than double your tool life compared to traditional high speed steel cutters.

For roughing, semi-finishing and finishing, the innovative hobbing tool solution covers gear profile sizes in the range module 4-6. 

With standard carbide inserts for gear profiles according to DIN3972-2 it is custom-made for specific profiles with, for example, addendum modification and protuberance.  The hob is extremely easy-to-use with the iLock interface ensuring precision and stability. CoroMill 176 is registered as Quality class B in accordance with DIN3968.

For all types of heavy machining operations in large components, Coromant Capto size C10, improves performance by allowing higher feeds and greater depths of cut. A flange diameter of 100 mm means a coupling suitable for heavy loads providing extreme stability in milling and turning applications.

Integrated LEDs are often difficult to see because they are small and not very bright.  Murrelektronik's M12 Steel solves this problem. Our integrated LED wraps around the base and lights up the complete cable seal. The luminous area is ten times bigger than that of a conventionally integrated LED. The compact Tree switches series can combine up to eight Ethernet terminal devices and integrate them economically into a network. CAL Sensors expanded the series of multiple channel detectors with filters. The thermoelectrically cooled version MBXT1S-18T-4 was added to the series. Compared to the uncooled version, the sensitivity and performance have been increased. Both versions are available from LASER COMPONENTS.

The detectors are primarily used in gas measurement technology. In the standard version of the PbSe multicolor detector, gas filters are integrated to filter for hydrocarbons (3.34 µm), CO2 (4.26 µm), and CO (4.60 µm). The full width half maximum is 140 nm each. A reference filter at 3.85 µm with a full width half maximum of 200 nm is also integrated.

LASER COMPONENTS‘ partner for optical filters, Omega Optical, Inc., was the first filter manufacturer to use dual magnetron reactive sputtering technology (DMRS). With success. Product demand is so high that currently a further powerful DMRS unit is being installed.

The advantages of this modern technology include high evaporation rates and, subsequently, short process times as well as high stability and reproducibility – both within a wafer and from batch to batch. The modern and inexpensive technology guarantees high quality.

All of the filters manufactured by Omega using DMRS technology are sold under the description „QuantaMAX“. These products feature steep edges and low pass-band ripples for highest demands. They are used in Raman spectroscopy, image processing, or clinical chemistry. In particular for medium and large quantities this new unit is profitable, which is then reflected in competitive prices for our customers.

SUR series: New silicon reach-through avalanche photodiodes (APD) with high sensitivity in the DUV/UV wavelength range have been recently developed by LASER COMPONENTS.

Many applications, particularly in the medical and bio-medical fields require highly sensitive detectors in the short wavelength range (blue and below), but so far there have been few commercially available avalanche photodetectors with adequate performance to satisfy the demands of such applications.

New reach through APD. Through internal development efforts LASER COMPONENTS has succeeded in developing a reach-through avalanche photodiode with sensitivity and low noise performance operating in the blue wavelength range and superior to any similar detector available presently on the market.

SUR series offers excellent DUV performance. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the new LASER COMPONENTS reach-through APD extends further into the DUV than any devices currently available on the market. Its operation as a packaged component is ultimately limited only by the transmission of the package window, optimized for wavelengths starting at 250 nm and up. Such a high sensitivity even for wavelengths below 250 nm, possible if device is operated under vacuum conditions, has been achieved by a specially designed reach-through APD structure with an ultra thin surface top layer grown using a unique epitaxial procedure.

Advantage: unmatched noise and sensitivity. An important additional advantage of the new reach-through APD is its unmatched noise and sensitivity performance over the widest commercially available wavelength range, from 250 nm to 1100 nm. APD sizes from 0.5 mm dia. to 3 mm dia. active areas are available in special packaging optimized for the UV wavelength range.

The new, Telaire T8700 wall mount humidity and temperature transmitter from the Advanced Sensors business of GE. Measurement & Control Solutions can help to control building energy efficiency, maintain a comfortable environment and minimize condensation problems. It offers accurate and repeatable measurement and transmission and its easy installation fits it for application in a wide range of commercial buildings.

“Precise data on humidity and temperature is vital for efficient and safe HVAC control,” says Chris Ranwell, Global Product manager for the Advanced Sensors business, “Condensation can lead to mold and associated building decay and health risks. Moreover, considerable energy savings can be made by closely controlling the relative humidity, as this can prevent unnecessary air cooling. The new Telaire T8700 complements our line of award winning Ventostat’s for CO2 demand control ventilation and give customers simple low cost options for humidity control.”

The new transmitter uses GE's own ChipCap sensor that has very fast response times and long-term stability. The plug-in ChipCap sensor module also allows quick and simple field replacement eliminating the need to replace or return the complete transmitter for recalibration. The transmitter has an accuracy of +/- 2.5% and has standard analog outputs, including 0-5V and 4-20mA, that are all user selectable. Temperature measurements can be made by the active signal conditioned output as well as the standard passive 10K Type II thermistor.

The T8700 is available in two sizes to suit the European and US markets and is offered in display and non-display options. All models are easy to install, through a two-piece enclosure and simple terminal blocks.

GE’s (NYSE: GE) Trench Etched Resonant Pressure (TERPS) technology is now available for the first time in a range of new pressure sensors from the sensing business of GE Energy, Measurement & Control Solutions. The RPS 8000 and the DPS 8000 resonant silicon pressure sensors offer accuracy and stability greater by a factor of ten over existing piezoresistive pressure sensors and significantly extend the pressure range capability conventionally associated with resonating pressure technology (RPT) sensors. The new sensors feature physical isolation from the pressure medium through a metallic isolation diaphragm and an oil-filled chamber, and this enables a very robust packaging, suitable for harsh environments. A wide selection of electrical and pressure connectors is available to suit specific requirements. Typical applications range from aerospace to sub-sea and from process engineering and metrology to industrial instrumentation.

As Ian Abbott, product manager for pressure sensors, explains, “Through our Druck product line, we have been able to offer a resonant silicon product, the RPT Series, for some years. The new TERPS technology is the result of extensive research and development into the design and manufacture of silicon resonating pressure sensors both within GE and in collaboration with universities. The RPS 8000 and DPS 8000 sensors incorporate this technology and feature all the inherent features of resonant silicon, but with significantly greater capability in terms of pressure range (up to 70 bar), temperature range (-40°C to +85°C) and mechanical packaging. In addition, the bulk micromachining of the silicon, a technology we have migrated from our advanced sensors business, greatly improves product delivery dates.”

The new sensors operate in essentially the same way as an RPT sensor. The silicon structure is driven into resonance by the application of an electrostatic field and when pressure is applied to a diaphragm, the silicon resonator is stretched, changing the frequency, much like a guitar string. This change in frequency relates directly to the applied pressure. The RPS 8000 and the DPS 8000 sensors differ only in their respective outputs. The DPS 8000 incorporates an integral microprocessor and RS485/RS232 outputs to provide direct digital output. The RPS 8000 delivers a TTL frequency output and a mV temperature measurement from an integral temperature diode. These can be combined in a customer’s own digital equipment to provide a pressure reading. The RPS 8000 is ideal for OEMs and systems developers who wish to incorporate high accuracy, stable pressure measurement

The TERPS technology employed by the new sensors uses three major manufacturing and packaging techniques. Deep reactive ion etching allows the creation of complex and arbitrary geometries within the resonating structure. This optimizes the design and performance of the resonator to make higher pressure and temperature ranges possible. The use of silicon fusion bonding allows for the machining of separate components of the sensor to be processed separately and then fused together retaining the properties of single crystal silicon. This provides greater flexibility in the design of the sensor element making higher pressure and temperature ranges possible. A new frequency detection method that provides a much stronger signal from the resonator has made it possible to package the sensor element in a way that can be mechanically isolated from the process media. This is a significant advancement for a sensor of this performance class over other high accuracy technologies that are typically limited to dry non-corrosive gases. In addition, associated electronics can be further from a TERPS sensor, which permits operation in higher temperature environments.

The PACE 1000 pressure indicator is the latest in the new generation of PACE high precision, modular pressure instrumentation for rack-mounting, test bench or bench top applications from the Sensing business of GE Measurement & Control solutions. It is available in three grades of precision performance and a choice of pressure ranges, pneumatic and hydraulic, and features internal data logging as standard. It will find application throughout the industrial, process and metrology sectors and an aeronautical option provides all pressure indications in aeronautical units.

As Mark Singleton, product manager for the new PACE 1000, explains, “This is an exciting addition to the PACE platform and establishes GE’s Sensing business as a leading player in the precision pressure indicator market. As well as being a versatile and flexible stand-alone solution, the PACE 1000 also integrates seamlessly with our recently launched 4Sight , web-based calibration and maintenance software to provide a fully automated and powerful workstation.”

The inherent precision and stability of the PACE 1000 is derived from the instrument’s incorporation of GE’s range of digitally-characterized, piezo-resistive and resonant pressure sensors. This has allowed three grades of accuracy, up to 0.005% of full-scale deflection, to be offered to suit specific requirements, while long term stability is up to 0.01% of reading over a year.  The instrument’s internal logging feature simplifies tasks such as sensor- and leak-testing and data is available through an on-screen display or can be downloaded to a PC.

Pressure ranges are available up to 1000bar (14500psi) gauge and absolute and up to three individual channels can be displayed on the instrument’s high resolution touch screen.  A touch screen and a high-resolution ¼ VGA display ensure that the PACE 1000 is extremely easy to operate and read.  A simple icon menu allows easy and intuitive set-up of controller parameters and connectivity is via RS232,  IEEE, Ethernet and USB providing for easy PC and peripherals connection, the use of set-up software and diagnostics downloads for technical support.  A wide range of options includes a leak test facility, a switch test capability for automating the testing of pressure switch devices, volt-free contacts for control of peripheral devices such as vacuum pumps and ovens and analog output to allow the instrument to interface with PC or PLC I/O cards,remote displays or other data logging equipment.

The CRx25P computed radiography (CR) imaging solution from the Inspection Technologies business of GE Measurement & Control Solutions combines high scanning resolution and throughput with compact design and light weight  to provide an innovative, portable inspection solution to a wide range of applications throughout the industrial and process spectrum, from oil and gas to power generation and aerospace.

As Martin Sauerschnig, Product Manager at GE, explains, “Weighing just 21kg (46 lb) , the CRx25P represents the latest generation of portable scanners. It features an upgraded plate transport system, which optimizes plate handling and it accepts flexible phosphor imaging plates up to 35 cm (14 inch) wide and of virtually any length, with one plate being fed into the unit while the other plate is being scanned.”

The scanner offers all the acknowledged benefits of computed radiography over film radiography in terms of faster exposures, wider latitude, fewer retakes and overall reduced materials and labour costs. The CRx25P can be operated at standard scan resolutions of 50 micron or 100 micron, where it is particularly suitable for corrosion/erosion inspection. It can also be operated at scan resolutions of 17 micron and 25 micron, making it qualified for weld inspections in compliance with international standards. In addition, a battery-powered version enables autonomous operation in special environments. Optional accessories include a ruggedized protective transport case, drum extensions and imaging plate guides.

As with all GE’s CR imaging solutions, the new scanner can be used with the Rhythm software platform, which allows acquisition, reporting, review and archiving of inspection results in the industry-standard DICONDE protocol.  Advanced image review tools ensure optimum productivity. The scanners can also be used with GE’s recently introduced Flash!Filters to allow instant image enhancement and faster defect detection.

Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation is expanding communications options across its motor protection and soft starter solutions to better serve industrial and OEM customers. The new C441 Ethernet series of communications cards allow customers to select from Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP, HTTP web services and Modbus RTU communication protocols in a single card. The added communications provide electrical original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and industrial customers, as well as machinery OEMs and panel builders, with flexible communication options to configure, control and monitor their systems.

“The new connectivity options help electrical and machinery OEMs and industrial users address problems before they cause downtime or excessive energy waste,” said Adam Krug, product manager at Eaton. “Integral web services allow for configuration, control, monitoring and diagnostics. Also, the flexibility in communications allows OEM customers to add value to their equipment with simple and desirable features, like supervision and control.”

This latest offering is compatible with Eaton C440, XTOE and C441 electronic motor protection relays, S611 soft starters, and can be used as stand-alone input/output (IO). Now, the suite of protocols available for Eaton motor protection and soft starter solutions includes PROFIBUS, Modbus TCP and RTU, DeviceNet, and Ethernet IP.

Integral web services provide an easy-to-use web-based graphical user interface (GUI) to make it easier to recognize potential problems. Using a laptop or smart device, customers can drill down to a given load by simply entering an IP address into their web browser. With four levels of access, the cards ensure only those with credentials have access to critical or sensitive functions.

Problems can be addressed in real time with intelligent monitoring readouts from starters and onboard available four digital inputs (120 volts alternating current or 24 volts direct current) and two discrete relay outputs. With a dual port switch, the Ethernet card allows for easy daisy chaining and reliable ring configurations. Additionally, customers have the ability to use one network for control and another for monitoring – through the Modbus serial protocol used in parallel with the Ethernet network –allowing redundant communications and greater reliability with a single card.

E-T-A Circuit Breakers is pleased to announce the PR60 and PR80 Power Relays as the latest addition to its products specifically designed for the commercial vehicle market.  The PR60 is a monostable relay containing one coil and one resting position. The PR80 is a bistable relay containing two coils and two resting positions – it is switched ON through an impulse and remains in the ON position until it is switched off by an additional impulse.  The PR60 and PR 80 are designed for continuous loads up to 300A and current peaks up to 2400A – making the products suitable for single-pole switching of large loads in military, construction and agricultural equipment.  The relays can be operated from the driver’s cabin and protect the circuit by means of physical isolation.

The PR60 and PR80 are environmentally sealed with protection standards of IP67 which offers a high level of protection against water or dust access.  Additionally, with a shock rating of 40 g and vibration rating of 6 g, the PR 60 and PR 80 are optimal for use in the most physically demanding applications.  Main load connections are by means of M8 (100 A and 200A) or M10 (200A and 300A) stud terminals with an insulating barrier between the terminals to protect against accidental shorting when the cables are connected.

The PR60 and PR80 power relays are available in voltage ratings 12 V, 24 V and 48 V and are ideally suited for use as a battery disconnect relay or for switching other high current circuits in trucks, buses, construction machinery military equipment and special vehicles. 

E-T-A Circuit Breakers is pleased to announce the new SVS16-PB-08 ProfiBus power distribution and remote output system.  The SVS16 provides selective over current protection, power distribution to load circuits as well as switching, protection and monitoring of digital outputs to field devices up to 10 A.

The integration of OpenCan technology enables communication of operating and error conditions, as well as switching and resetting of individual circuits of 24 VDC loads.  Profibus-DP makes the SVS16 an intelligent sub-system for power distribution integrated directly to the Process & Control layer of any automation architecture.

The Din Rail mounted SVS16-PB-08 accommodates eight electronic circuit protectors, either the ESX10-125 (with reset input) or ESX10-115 (with control input). Both devices provide selective over current protection of sensors/actuators, peripheral sub-assemblies, etc. and its supply lines. The SVS16 can also be populated with E-T-A solid state power relays (E-1048) to monitor and control hydraulic or pneumatic solenoids, and provides open wire detection, short circuit, and overload protection of field output loads, ranging from 0.5 amps to 5 amps.  The SVS16 has a Profibus-DP interface supporting all specified baud rates up to max. 12 MBaud.

The SVS16 reduces wiring times and increases diagnostic capabilities for applications in the Petrochemical, Power & Energy and Pharmaceutical industries.

E-T-A Circuit Breakers is pleased to announce the release of the Type II version of the 1620 MINI thermal automotive circuit breaker.  After rigorous research, development and testing the E-T-A Type II circuit breaker with modified reset has the lowest operating temperature in the MINI circuit protection market.

The addition of the Type II version of the 1620 to the already existing Type I and III versions of the product, rounds out E-T-A’s MINI circuit breaker offering.  E-T-A is now the only manufacturer in the market to provide the four type classes (I, II, III, and III*) of circuit breakers meeting all requirements of SAE J553 in the miniature package.

The Type II 1620 is available in current ratings from 5… 30 A with voltage ratings of 12 VDC.  The product housings are color-coded consistently with industry standard current ratings and are designed to the form, fit and function of other MINI blade products in the market making the 1620 interchangeable with blade type fuses.  The integration of the 1620 into designs allows for trouble-free retrofit capability, eliminates the need for spare fuses, saves space and reduces vehicle downtime.

The Type II 1620 is intended for the protection of 12 V on-board electrical systems in passenger cars, trucks, buses, watercraft, specialty vehicles and extra low voltage wiring systems requiring modified reset capability (Type II).

E-T-A is pleased to announce the latest addition to its line of electronic circuit protection products.  The ESX10-TC is a 12 V DC version of the ESX10-T, 24 V DC product offering and is designed for SCADA/RTU applications – providing optimal protection for both 12 V DC switch-mode power supplies and solar/battery based systems.The most unique feature of ESX10-TC is the ability to remotely reset the device from outside an enclosure. This can be accomplished via a simple momentary push button or from an output of an RTU or PLC controller.  In RTU/SCADA applications, equipment is primarily located in remote unpopulated locations.  The remote reset functionality reduces the need for field engineers to travel to sites to troubleshoot equipment – reducing the overall cost of equipment maintenance and downtime.

The ESX10-TC is available in fixed current ratings from 1 A to 10 A and provides selective load protection - ensuring exclusive disconnection of the current path in the event of an overload or short circuit in the field load device without compromising the DC 12 V power source (i.e. battery drain). 

The ESX10-TC limits the short circuit current to 1.3 to 1.8 times rated current and disconnects 100 ms after the fault has been detected. Inrush peaks are tolerated from capacitive loads of more than 20,000 μF and is designed with an auxiliary output to provide individual alarm capabilities for critical process flow applications.  This space-saving device has a width of only 12.5 mm and 80 mm in height and depth. Its low power consumption makes it ideally suited for battery-buffered DC 12 V applications, specifically in the solar industry.

The ESX10-TC is Din rail ready and can be mounted either individually or in a group side-by-side with a simplistic bus bar system for +12 V DC and ground.   Also utilizes the same screw terminals as its 24 V DC counterpart which allows up to a 10 mm² conductor to be wired directly to the device, this ensures reliable and safe wiring connections.

Bulgin’s new self-pairing Bluetooth cable replacement products eliminate data cables and allow equipment with RS485 or RS232 data ports to communicate using wireless Bluetooth technology.

The IP68 rated environmentally sealed enclosure protects against dust and moisture, so the units can be used in numerous harsh or hostile applications. The PX0885 can be mounted internally or externally for maximum flexibility, convenience and also for optimum range.

Wireless point-to-point or multi-drop data connections can be made quickly and easily between serial interfaces or dumb devices and work transparently without any need for a PC, PLC or Bluetooth software. Master and Slave units automatically establish a data link between themselves; no intervention or special serial commands are required, enabling fast and cost-effective cable replacement or data network extension. The Master automatically connects with up to six Slave units to form a multi-drop network.

The communication Baud rate, parity, stop bits and flow control can be re-configured using a downloadable software application. Half and Full Duplex RS232, RS422 (4-wire) and RS485 (2-wire) modes are easily selected. Factory default settings are: 9600, N, 8, 1 without flow control, and the products will self-connect and work straight out-of-the box without any intervention or adjustment.

Typical applications include: wireless metering and telemetry, temporary and permanent installations, water industry, environmental monitoring, energy management, factory monitoring, plant and machinery, transport/traffic systems and vehicle communications between tractor and trailer.

These units can be used when cables are difficult, impractical or expensive to install, for example; between different buildings, between walls or floors, around other obstructions, or open field sites. With a wireless communication range of up to 100m, significant savings could be made over a hard-wired solution in terms of installation time, disruption and cost.

An interface connector adapter board, PX0884, is available, providing convenient screw terminals for connection to serial data lines and power supply, and also an industry standard RS232 9-D connector. DIP switches allow selection of RS232/RS485 and Half/Full duplex modes, and alteration of 9-D connector pinout for DTE or DCE compatibility.

Bulgin announces new version of MPI range of illuminated vandal resistant switches.

All MPI switches have bodies and buttons machined from high-grade stainless steel. A tough Polycarbonate lens in the stainless steel actuator gives a robust and aesthetically-pleasing switch.

All switches are front-panel sealed to IP66. However, Bulgin’s new range is also rear-of-panel sealed. This makes them suitable for use outdoors or in other situations where condensation or leakage behind control panels can be problematic. Rear panel sealing is available in a variety of styles, including single and dual colour with dot or ring LED illumination. Independent switch and LED terminals allows customers the flexibility to choose between permanent or controlled illumination. Contacts are single-pole push-to-make.

The switches have either solder tags or screw terminals, which facilitates easy field servicing, and also feature potted moulding and flying leads to the rear of the switch. With integral supply resistors the LEDs can now be driven directly from 6, 12 and 24V supplies.

The MPI series is tested to 750,000 mechanical and 35,000 electrical operations and rated at 50mA, 24V dc. The series has also recently undergone design improvements at construction stage, incorporating surface mount LEDs and TVS’s.

All switches in the MPI series have momentary action contacts making them ideal for access control and door entry applications including lifts, panic buttons, car park barriers, emergency telephones, vending machines and food processing.

Elektron Technology, owner of the Arcolectric, Bulgin and Sifam electronics manufacturing brands, introduces the FX0442 and FX0443; two new vertical, PCB-mounting fuseholder designs in Bulgin’s already extensive fuseholder range.

Accommodating 5 x 20mm fuses and rated at 10A, 250Vac with maximum power dissipation of 2.5W, the FX0442 and FX0443 are designed and manufactured for volume applications where PCB mounting offers a fast, economic method of integrating the fuse element into the circuit.

Both the FX0442 and FX0443 have straight PC spills with either hand-release or screwdriver/tool release caps. The caps are bayonet-fitting for quick, reliable insertion and removal of the fuse. Contact resistance of both fuseholders is <10mΩ and insulation resistance is rated at >10MΩ at 500V d.c.

Both fuseholders are qualified to shock-protection category PC2, meaning live parts are inaccessible with a standard test finger in accordance with IEC60529. Using nylon and polyester flame retardant materials with flammability ratings to UL94V-0 at 85˚C they pass the glow wire test to EN60695-2-12. Both fuseholders also have international approvals from VDE and UL covering both the USA and Canada.

Bulgin Components, a brand of Elektron Technology, has uprated its popular Standard Buccaneer range of IP68-rated environmentally sealed circular connectors with higher voltage ratings. The two, three, four, six and seven pole versions have been uprated from the original 250V to 277V. This upgrade extends the ranges suitability into commercial and industrial applications, such as overhead lighting and high power equipment.

The Standard Buccaneer model comes in seven different body styles, including flex, in-line flex, front and rear panel, PCB, bulkhead and flange mount and is available in two, three, four, six, seven, nine, 12 and 25 poles. The wide range of body styles lends the standard Buccaneer to being a versatile connector for many applications.

Ratings range from 1A/50V to 12A/277Vac/dc. Cable acceptance ranges from 3.5mm to 9mm overall diameter, whilst the connectors simple construction ensures ease of assembly without the need for special tooling.

Accessories include sealing caps, insulation boots, cable support accessories and rear of panel-mounting backshells, providing a rear of panel seal to the panel-mounting connectors in this range.

The Standard Buccaneer carries UL, CSA and VDE approvals.

BEI Sensors has released the industry’s first UL and ATEX rated explosion proof hollow shaft encoder, Model HS52. BEI has developed this ultra rugged and space-saving industrial encoder to meet the high standards and certifications required for use in potentially explosive environments. The HS52 is capable of operating directly in Division 1 and Zone 1 environments where ignitable concentrations of flammab gases, vapors or liquids are likely to exist under normal operating conditions. This rugged and reliable encoder does not require an accompanying Intrinsic Safety barrier, which simplifies installation and provides a more streamlined feedback system in explosion proof environments.

Using the explosion proof construction method, this hazardous duty rotary encoder is housed in an enclosure that can withstand and contain an internal explosion of the most volatile gas-to-air mixture. Fitted with a flexible shaft bore design, the HS52 housing can be rigidly mounted, preventing stress to encoder bearings and providing a more secure attachment for the required hazardous area conduit fittings. Additionally, the compact hollow shaft design offers engineers space-saving advantages over traditional shafted encoders. Duncan Electronics, a division of BEI Technologies, Inc., has introduced the highly miniaturized 9600 Linear Motion Position Sensor Series. Designed with a short 0.15" (3.8mm) mounting terminal, the 9600 provides an extremely low profile. The overall height of the sensor is 0.50" (12.7mm), which allows installation in applications with abnormally tight packaging constraints such as joystick controls, HVAC, robotics, medical, aerospace, and industrial automation and controls.

Offering superior precision feedback, the new low profile potentiometer features a spring return shaft that follows the surface of the measured assembly. This simplifies the mechanical interface needs of the installation. The 9600 Series is constructed of high-temperature (135°C) plastic materials to provide a highly ruggedized electromechanical device for reliable position feedback in most applications, from delicate laboratory to harsh environments.

This new line of sensors complements Duncan's existing configurations with the longer terminal lengths of .280" (7.1mm). Performance of the 9600 miniature sensor series is accurate over a temperature range of -40°C to 135°C, shock up to 50 G's, vibration of 15G's, 50 to 10,000 Hz, and humidity level of 95 percent at 38°C. Other features include standard electrical travel (stroke) lengths of 0.5" (12.7mm), 1.0" (25.4mm) and 1.5"(38.1mm) for measurement versatility. Standard linearity is ±2 percent with ±0.35 percent, the best practical linearity based on stroke length. Mechanical life is rated at two million full cycles and five million dither cycles. Miniaturized injection-molded bodies measure 0.35"W (9mm) by 0.50"H (12.7mm) with lengths of 1.06" (26.98mm), 1.56"(39.6mm) and 2.06" (52.3mm), depending on electrical travel.

Duncan Electronics, a company of Custom Sensors & Technology (CST), Inc., has introduced the 9360 Non-Contacting Rotary Dual Output Hall Effect Sensor.  Designed with Duncan ’s second generation Hall effect chip technology, the new device features 360 degrees rotation capabilities to meet a broad range of rotary position sensing needs in specialty vehicles.

The 9360 combines the superior durability of Duncan ’s existing 9900 sensor technology with the new Hall effect technology that allows 360º of absolute position feedback and infinite rotation. These capabilities expand on Duncan ’s proven high performance dual Hall effect electronics that were previously limited to 120 degrees of rotation. With its infinite rotation capabilities, the new sensor is particularly well-suited for high-vibration applications in heavy equipment, off-highway, marine and industrial markets. Specific uses include throttle control and brake pedals, wheel positioning for tractors, farm implement position feedback and forklift position sensing.

The 9360 incorporates compression molded, rotating Neodymium disk magnet. By using a high quality magnet, Duncan can provide a strong magnetic field that offers exceptionally high accuracy and reliability. The unit’s integrated Hall effect chip is enclosed in a liquid tight, fully sealed package that meets and/or exceeds protection seal class IP66/IP67.  An integrally molded 6-pin connector makes the sealed connection with industry standard Packard Electric Metri-Pack connector for easy plug-in installation. The resulting combination of the Neodymium magnet, sealed packaging and robust construction offer excellent temperature stability and corrosion resistance in an extremely durable package capable of withstanding extremely harsh environments.

Other outstanding performance characteristics include an electrical angle of 0-359.9 degrees and an operating temperature range of -40 to +85°C (-40 to 185°F) with a wider temperature range of up to 125°C (257°F) available optionally. BEI Duncan Electronics has added the 8360 hollow shaft, through-hole, non-contacting position sensor series to its comprehensive line of robust, highly accurate position sensors. Featuring 360 degree continuous rotational capabilities in a low-profile, through-hole package, the new device provides an ideal solution for applications where space and sensor mounting flexibility are critical.
