Mexico’s President, Felipe Calderón inaugurated the Cogeneration Plant of Tres Valles. It is worth of mentioning that this plant, located in the community of Tres Valles, will reduce over 3.6 million tons of carbon dioxide that are annually emitted into the atmosphere. “If the refineries of the country use this technology, we can reduce the emission to a quantity equivalent to removing 70 thousand cars from the streets a year” explained President Calderón.

The state-of-the-art technology of this plant, which uses WEG electric equipment in its generation system, has been awarded the Innovation Prize by Mexico’s National Science and Technology Council.

WEG supplied all the equipment for the electric system: a generator of 40MW, the panels and control centers for medium and low-voltage motors, the automation and supervisory control, including the substation turnkey project.

The objective of this project is to obtain a more efficient use of resources, maximizing the employment of sugarcane bagasse in order to reduce operational costs and promote the generation of clean energy upon the replacement of conventional hydrocarbon-based fuels.

Supply to the Egyptian Ministry of Housing, Utilities and Urban Development has modernized the main station for sewage treatment in the state of Ismailia.

Brazilian technology is helping to reduce the environmental impact in Egypt. In partnership with Lotas Comércio Exterior, WEG supplied six 865 KW motors to Orascom Construction Industries. The equipment, already installed, has doubled the capacity of the main sewage treatment station of the Egyptian state of Ismailia.

The supply of the motors is part of the ABU ATWA Sewage Pumping Station, a project of the National Organization for Potable Water and Sanitary Drainage - NOPWASD, a sector of the Egyptian Ministry of Housing, Utilities and Urban Development. The state of Ismailia is located in northeastern Egypt along the Suez Canal, and has more than 940 thousand inhabitants. Based in Cairo, Orascom, an engineering and construction company, was responsible for building the project and also for importing the WEG motors.

The six MAR450 865KW 6P 3300V 50Hz V1 motors were shipped in April last year to the port of Alexandria and have been in full operation since August. Before replacing the old equipment with WEG solutions, the station had only half the current capacity. Today, it receives waste from other secondary stations in 23 cities in the region and transfers the collected material to another location where the sewage is treated.

This is the first time that WEG provides equipment to the Egyptian Ministry of Housing, Utilities and Urban Development and it represents the company's official entry in the water-sewage segment in that country. Orascom engineer Amr Eissa, technical manager responsible for the ABU ATWA project, says that WEG is already in the list of suppliers for new projects. "We are very pleased with the excellent performance and efficiency of the motors. The on-time delivery, monitoring throughout the process and results of the tests were important to the project," he says.

To Reginaldo Rodrigues Alves of WEG's International Sales Department, the participation of the Egyptian-Brazilian Lotas Comércio Exterior office in Cairo was a plus in the successful negotiation. For Abdel Wahab Mansour, CEO of the Lotas Group in Egypt and Brazil, WEG is already renowned in many international markets and the efforts and investments to meet the requirements of the Egyptian Ministry of Housing, Utilities and Urban Development and Orascom have paid off.

The Han® PushPull (variant 14 according to IEC 61076-3-117) is the standardized connector for industrial PROFINET cabling with IP65/67 protection. There are now two new panel feed-throughs available in the robust metal housing for transmission rates up to 1/10 GBit Ethernet, Category 6, Class EA.

The panel feed-throughs for round and rectangular cutouts allow swift and simple installation in devices and switch cabinets, as well as retrofitting of existing housings with a PROFINET interface with IP 65/67 protection.

The female inserts are executed with 360° shielding in order to increase the electromagnetic compatibility and the transmission path's immunity to interference.

In order to allow users to make independent decisions on the system’s grounding concept, the RJ45 female inserts snap into the metal panel feed-throughs to provide electrical isolation. This ensures that the RJ45 shielding potential and the housing ground are not accidentally connected. For selective grounding of the RJ45 shielding potential, the shielding potential on the panel feed-through and that on the RJ45 jack module can be gripped via a FASTON and electrically connected to each other. Electromagnetic disturbances that are injected on the data shield and enter the device are consequently effectively dissipated.

12DZ and 12DZ-2W in the popular single-in-line package expands the DC/DC converter portfolio of YDS (Distributor: MSC Vertriebs GmbH) with low-power models that offer wide input voltage ranges of 4.5-9 V, 9 -18 V or 18-36 V. With high efficiency and continuous short circuit protection these converters deliver an output power of 1 W and 2 W respectively over an ambient temperature range from -40 °C to +85 °C.

The series 12DZ and 12DZ-2W include standard models that generate output voltages of 5V, 9 V, 12 V, 15 V or 24 V. In production quantities other voltages can be supplied to customer specifications. The output voltage has an accuracy of ±5% and is regulated to ±0.5% over the entire input voltage range. Load regulation is ±1.5%. Ripple and noise does not exceed 100 mVpp or 1% of Vout respectively. Switching frequency is 100 kHz. Transient response to load steps of 50% is 350 µs.

The 12DZ and 12DZ-2W series guarantee an isolation of 3000 VDC between input and output and a lifetime (MTBF according to MIL-HDBK-217F) of 1.5 million hours minimum. These specifications make the low-cost converters optimum solutions for applications that must consider widely varying input voltages and/or need short circuit protection. They are a perfect upgrade for conventional 12D series models and similar converters from other brands.

LatticeECP3™ is the first and only PCI Express 2.0 compliant low-cost FPGA. The PCI Express 2.0 specification allows operation at a lower speed than PCI Express 1.1 (2.5 Gbps), but the loop bandwidth characteristics are different and more rigorous.

Now designers who need PCI Express 2.0 compliance, but do not need the PCI Express link to operate at 5 Gbps, can use the low-cost LatticeECP3 FPGA in PCI Express 2.0 compliant systems. Gleichmann Electronics now offers the new E520.01 12-fold low side driver from ELMOS Semiconductor. The E520.01 is a versatile device that can not only drive up to three unipolar stepper motors, but also DC motors, relays or LEDs.

The device features comprehensive safety and diagnosis functions such as, for example, motor stalling detection, which protects the mechanical components against overload by switching off automatically. Furthermore, an extensive short-circuit protection - including detection, limitation and diagnosis - ensures maximum safety even when driving inductive loads. Each output is monitored independently of each other for short circuits or interruption. Overvoltage and undervoltage switch-off and temperature monitoring complete the extensive safety functions of the E520.01.

For the configuration, drive and diagnosis of stepper motors, the stepper pattern desired by the customer - full step, half step or wave drive - must simply be predetermined via the integrated SPI interface. All other functions are provided automatically by the E520.01.

For driving LEDs or relays, the E520.01 has 3 pre-settable PWM generators whose frequencies are 200 Hz or 25 kHz. The duty cycle allows for linear or logarithmic configuration.

If only 8 channels are required, the E520.03 can be used. The E520.01 (12-fold low side driver) is supplied in a QFN32L5 package, the E520.03 (8-fold low side driver) in a QFN20L5 package. The two devices have the exact same electrical characteristics.

Silicon Laboratories Inc. (NASDAQ: SLAB), a leader in high-performance, analog-intensive, mixed-signal ICs, today introduced a family of digital isolators that offers the highest channel count, performance and data rate for demanding applications with isolation ratings up to 5 kV. The new Si86xx 3.75 kV and 5 kV digital isolators replace optocouplers in target applications requiring robust operation and high levels of insulation protection such as industrial automation and drives, motor control and medical systems. NSK Ltd. NSK will release this product mainly in emerging countries with booming motorcycle markets. The company expects to achieve global annual sales of one billion yen by 2015.

Markets where motorcycles are often used as means of transportation are continuing to grow in emerging countries. Especially in emerging countries, bearings used in motorcycle wheels must have high sealing performance to provide water and dust resistance to guarantee durability. Additionally, lowering the fuel consumption of motorcycles has become an issue recently in light of the need to comply with emissions control and because of soaring gasoline prices.

NSK Ltd. NSK will market this product for food machinery, medical industry production equipment, and other devices that are exposed to splashes of disinfectants, sterilization agents, salt water, or water, and for use in other corrosive environments. It expects sales of 300 million yen in fiscal 2014.

Martensite stainless steel bearings (hereinafter stainless steel bearings), which are more corrosion-resistant than regular steel bearings, are widely used in severe environments such as high humidity and underwater.

NSK's highly corrosion-resistant ES1 stainless steel, which is suited to wet environments such as underwater or where water is sprayed, and improves the corrosion resistance of regular stainless steel bearings, has been well received in the market. In addition to these wet environments, NSK has developed technology to further extend service life under more severely corrosive environments where rust and corrosion occur easily, such as in environments involving disinfectants, sterilization agents, and salt water.

NSK has now developed SUS Barrier™ bearings, stainless steel bearings with improved corrosion resistance achieved by forming a strong oxide layer on the surface of martensite stainless steel. This will help extend equipment maintenance intervals and improve production efficiency in water spray and other wet environments as well as for food processing equipment and medical industry production equipment, which are disinfected and sterilized frequently in a constant cycle, and for equipment such as conveyors in the fisheries industry, which are exposed to salt damage.

NSK Ltd. (NSK; Headquarters: Tokyo, Japan; President and CEO: Norio Otsuka) today announced that it has developed a silent needle roller bearing that cuts noise to a third that of the conventional product. The new product is perfect for electric components mounted in vehicles with extremely quiet interiors while driving under the power of an electric motor, such as electric vehicles (EV) and hybrid vehicles (HEV). The ends of rollers (rolling element) in needle roller bearings used in automotive electric components are crowned (i.e. given a curved arc) to make the bearings able to withstand a heavy load. With the conventional crowing method, the roundness of the roller ends is inferior compared to the central part of the roller, resulting in loud noise from the bearing under conditions in which the roller has a large tilt. For this reason, in EVs and HEVs, in which the vehicle interior is extremely quiet, the operating noise of electric components that traditionally would not have been noticeable can disrupt the comfortableness of passengers. With the following excellent features, the new product contributes to improved automotive comfort by reducing noise from needle roller bearings used in electric components and drive components.

Novotechnik introduces the TX2 Series of linear position sensors. This family of rod-style sensors is rated at IP 67 to protect from dirt, dust and humidity. TX2 Series sensors are available from stock in eight stroke lengths from 25 to 300 mm. These sensors also feature compact size with mechanical lengths from 88 to 374 mm, measured on center of pivot heads and a housing diameter of 18 mm.

The sensors feature backlash-free pivot heads that provide up to 12.5° of free movement, which can especially benefit mobile applications. TX2 Series sensors
can also be easily mounted with two clamps that slide over the TX2 housing and screw-down with supplied hardware.

Repeatability of the TX2 Series is 0.01mm of full scale regardless of stroke length and resolution is better than 0.01 mm. Linearity is up to ±0.05 %. Life is up to 50 million movements. Electrical connections are made by either plug connector or cable. Nominal resistance is from 1 kΩ to 12 kΩ depending on stroke length.

Yokogawa Electric Corporation announces the development of an enhanced version of the ProSafe-RS safety instrumented system that is used to ensure the safety of plant operations. This new version, ProSafe-RS R3.01, features input modules that can directly receive voltage signals from temperature sensors as well as software that restricts the operations performed by individual engineers and records a log on their activities. In addition, new compact terminal boards have been developed for use with the ProSafe-RS safety instrumented system. The compact terminal boards will be released in June and ProSafe-RS R3.01 will be released in July.

Moulton College, Northampton – Using electrical systems for the measurement of mechanical forces is by no means limited to machines and laboratory based applications. In her recently completed research thesis ‘Girth Tensions and their Effects on Equine Stride Characteristics’, Sue Wright of Moulton College Northampton used load cells, motion sensors and GPS amongst other technologies to measure and record the tension within the girth strap used to hold the saddle in place.

The aim of the investigation was to determine if girth tension affects equine stride characteristics. The positioning and tightening of the girth strap has traditionally been based on the rider’s preference or own training, in the knowledge that too loose or too tight would be dangerous to both rider and horse.

It is well known that optimum girth tension varies between the size and type of horse, the activity –racing etc and the type of girth. However there is little if any published information on girth tension and how this may affect the locomotion of the horse, that is duration, stride length and speed.

A custom designed S-type tension load cell was used to continuously monitor the tension in the girth during the period under test. The load cell was mounted almost vertically alongside the chest of the horse where unwanted torsional effects on the load cell would be at their minimum, it was fitted to the strap via rod-end bearings and a cam buckle so that minute changes to the girth tension could be made.

This was connected to a T24 telemetry module, located in a pouch on top of the saddle which transmitted the force measurement reading wirelessly to a telemetry base station located nearby. This was plugged into a laptop that served to both power it and log the tension reading.

Extensive testing on 19 horses at 4 girth tension settings were conducted resulting in definite conclusions on the effect of girth tension on the speed, stride length, stride duration and walk.

This application is typical of the way in which Applied Measurements’ custom force sensors are helping all sectors of research and development as well as solving the needs of industrial production.

Applied Measurements have just designed and manufactured a special version of their compact CCG annular load cell (also known as a ‘ring load cell’ or ‘donut load cell’) for use in a particularly tough application where it is submerged 1 metre deep in potable water, subjected to a force of 160kN (~16 tonnes) and subjected to a repeated cycle of freezing and thawing.

The load cell design utilises 17-4PH stainless steel for the sensing element and cover in conjunction with a stainless steel IP68 cable gland, submersible polyurethane cable and a double ‘O’ ring sealing system to ensure that the transducer’s integrity is maintained at all times.

The submersible load cells achieved an accuracy of better than 0.5% of rated capacity despite their low height of just 40mm. It was also fully temperature compensated over the operating range to minimise the effect of the application’s cyclic thermal profile.

The submersible CCG annular load cell, alongside the DDEN in-line submersible load cell, are just two of a number of customised transducer designs from Applied Measurements that are suitable for both permanent and temporary submersion in a variety of medias including water and hydraulic oil.

The company is rapidly expanding production capacity at its state-of-the-art SiC wafer fabrication facility in Starkville, MS, (USA). A completely independent, vertically integrated SiC manufacturer with the most advanced SiC epitaxial and vertical trench process technology in the world, SemiSouth utilizes a proprietary and patented self-aligned JFET chip design enabling up to ten times smaller die size when compared to silicon super-junction MOSFETs or the latest trench IGBTs. The company also holds the record for the lowest 1200V power transistor specific on-resistance - under 2.5mΩ/cm².

The SJEP120R100, SJEP120R063 and SJEP170R550 Normally-OFF trench silicon carbide power JFETs are compatible with standard gate drive circuitry and feature a positive temperature coefficient for ease of paralleling. The voltage-controlled devices also have a low RDS(on)max, low gate charge and low intrinsic capacitance. The SJEP120R100 with an Rds(on) of 100mΩ enables extremely fast switching with no ‘tail’ current up to its maximum operating temperature of 175degC, and the SJEP120R063, with an Rds(on) of 63mOhms can enable switching losses of only 353µJ at 24A. These JFETs offer a blocking voltage of 1200V and exhibit temperature-independent switching behaviour. This latter device is being designed in by a number of Solar Inverter companies who are achieving product efficiencies of 98-99 per cent.

SemiSouth also offers a normally-on 1200V SiC JFET (SJDP120R085) for customers who can utilize the normally-on behaviour. It offers the same attractive features as the normally-off SJEP120R100 JFET, and in addition offers a higher saturation current (50A), lower on-resistance per unit area (85mΩ total), and the same or better switching performance. This product is being designed in also at a number of solar inverter and audio customers for high-efficiency or high-linearity applications.

At 1700V, SemiSouth’s new 4A SJEP170R550 SiC JFET delivers a higher blocking voltage (1700V), five times lower on-resistance (550mΩ), around ten times lower output capacitance (COSS = 20pF) and a gate charge (QG of 10nC) than competing 1500V silicon power transistors. It has a maximum operating temperature of 175degC. The SJEP170R550 is targeted for auxiliary flyback power supply applications running off the high voltage DC bus in AC Drives, UPS and Solar Inverters.

Residual particulate contamination from manufacturing processes can seriously impact the quality and reliability of automotive fluid circuit components. ISO 16232 specifies the requirements and methods required in order to achieve technical cleanliness. Our filter weighing solutions ensure that companies can comfortably comply with this ISO norm.

Contamination with particulate matter can have a negative impact on the performance of automotive fluid circuit components demanding that the presence of residual particles from the manufacturing process and assembly environment must be closely monitored. Early identification of a contaminated part or batch of parts is critical in order to avoid complicated and expensive corrective measures at a later date. ISO 16232 specifies the requirements for ensuring the technical cleanliness of these components. In the following article we outline how the contaminants, which have been collected on filters, can be gravimetrically analyzed.

Collection of Contaminants
Various methods are available for extracting the contaminants from the components, e.g. ultrasonic or pressure rinsing, and filters are used to collect the residual particles from the extraction liquid. The amount of particulate matter on a filter can be determined by differential weighing. A series of measurements are taken for each component. ISO 16232 states that the series can be terminated when the last reading amounts to no more than 10% of the total matter collected. A blank measurement must also be taken, which accounts for the particulate matter originating from the collection equipment itself. This must be less than 10% of the contamination level to avoid the blank measurement becoming significant in comparison to the contamination level. E.g. if a 4-place balance records a blank value of 0.3 mg, at least 3 mg should be collected during the component test. METTLER TOLEDO’s Excellence series offers balances with up to 7 decimal places which ensure the requirements of the ISO 16232 norm are met with a low level of measurement uncertainty.

Automotive suppliers have to meet strict requirements when producing plastic parts for car manufacturers. One critical parameter to be monitored continuously is the moisture content of plastic pellets. Balances play a central role in refining precious metals. They are used to ensure that the gold and silver content is measured with the highest possible accuracy. “We already use third generation METTLER TOLEDO balances in our gold and silver refinery where the highest weighing accuracy and reliable results are essential,” replied Lorenzo Medici, manager of SC Engineering at Argor-Heraeus, when asked about his experience with METTLER TOLEDO balances.

The importance of weighing becomes immediately evident during the factory tour at Argor-Heraeus located in Mendrisio in the southern part of Switzerland. Precision weighing plays a crucial role in the most important process steps, such as incoming inspection, within the foundry and for refining and finishing steps. The weight is checked before and after each process step in order to closely monitor any weight differences.

Gold under full control
All data is recorded and fed into the IT system in order to closely monitor the flow of gold material. The balance’s diverse connectivity options optimize the easy integration into the current ERP system and the printed reports, together with the data integration, ensure permanently traceable results for the accountability of every gold sample.

From fire assay to final product
One of the most impressive and yet age-old processes in gold refining is the so-called ‘fire assay’; a gravimetrical method used to determine the purity of gold. This assay plays an important role throughout the entire refining process from accepting raw materials through to the finished product.

Gold samples are accurately weighed on Excellence XP6 Micro Balances for the fire assay process then mixed with a defined amount of silver and wrapped in a lead foil. Each sample is then placed into a cupel and heated in a furnace at 1200 °C. The cupel, made of compressed magnesium oxide powder, absorbs the melted and oxidized base metals leaving a precious metal drop in the cupel. After solidification, the resulting bead is flattened to a thin plate and treated in a nitric acid bath to remove any silver. The resulting pure gold plate is subsequently re-weighed on the Micro Balance to determine the sample’s fine gold content. Argor-Heraeus is highly satisfied with METTLER TOLEDO’s Excellence XP6 Micro Balance as it generates fast yet accurate results-an important element for employees weighing so many samples per day.

National Instruments today announced the NI 9862 C Series high-speed controller area network (CAN) module, the newest addition to the NI-XNET family of high-performance interfaces designed to communicate with embedded networks. The module expands the NI-XNET family to the NI CompactDAQ and CompactRIO hardware platforms and introduces CAN support to NI CompactDAQ. The NI 9862 provides sustained transfer rates up to 1 Mbit/s and includes similar advantages of other NI-XNET PCI and PXI interfaces including hardware-accelerated messaging, onboard frame processing and communication with 100 percent bus loads without dropped frames.

The NI CompactDAQ platform provides portable CAN communication with the availability of 4- and 8-slot USB or Ethernet chassis. NI CompactDAQ is compatible with more than 50 other NI C Series I/O modules, and the NI 9862 high-speed CAN module can be synchronized with other I/O modules in the same chassis. The modular nature of NI CompactDAQ, combined with its seamless integration with NI LabVIEW graphical programming software, increases ease of use and facilitates a faster time-to-measurement solution.

CAN is recognized as the standard in-vehicle automotive network and used in a variety of other industries including public transportation, avionics, farm/forest machinery, medical devices, military systems and industrial automation. Using the new module, engineers can develop applications including the following:

The NI-XNET family offers a common programming interface for multiple automotive networks such as CAN, LIN and FlexRay. The interfaces combine the performance and flexibility of low-level microcontroller interfaces with the speed and power of Windows and LabVIEW Real-Time OS development. They also can be easily integrated into desktop real-time PCs and real-time PXI systems. The NI-XNET CAN interfaces include integrated database support for importing, editing and using frames and signals from FIBEX, .DBC and .NCD files. In addition, the CAN module also includes intuitive software tools and APIs to accelerate development efforts, and the same code can be used across PXI, PCI, NI CompactDAQ (USB and Ethernet) and CompactRIO hardware systems for additional time savings. This advantage makes it possible for engineers to standardize their CAN applications for a variety of settings and application areas.

Engineers also can use the module with the CompactRIO platform and conduct rapid prototyping more easily using a common programming interface comparable to other NI-XNET CAN interfaces such as PCI and PXI. Additionally, the module has a native, built-in functionality for common CAN communication applications in NI VeriStand, an out-of-the-box software solution for configuring real-time testing applications such as hardware-in-the-loop testing and test cell applications.

National Instruments today announced the NI PXIe-1435 high-performance Camera Link frame grabber. Engineers can use the new module to integrate high-speed and high-resolution imaging into their PXI systems, the industry standard for automated test with more than 1,500 measurement modules available from more than 70 vendors. By combining high-throughput imaging with the benefits of off-the-shelf PXI measurement hardware, NI now offers full software-defined solutions for demanding automated test applications in industries such as consumer electronics, automotive and semiconductor.

The NI PXIe-1435 is the industry’s highest throughput PXI frame grabber and acquires from all Camera Link camera configurations, including 10-tap extended-full, with up to 850 MB/s of throughput. Engineers can power cameras through Power over Camera Link (PoCL)-enabled cables, eliminating the need for additional wires in deployment environments. The frame grabber also offers 512 MB of DDR2 onboard acquisition memory for added reliability in transferring large images without fear of data overflow. Onboard digital I/O includes four bidirectional transistor-transistor logic (TTL), two opto-isolated inputs and one quadrature encoder for triggering and communicating inspection results with automation devices.

The frame grabber incorporates the synchronization, timing, data streaming and processing capabilities of the PXI Express specification, and supports image processing on complementary field-programmable gate array (FPGA) boards to further boost system performance.

“The NI PXIe-1435 frame grabber further complements our capabilities in the PXI platform,” said Matt Friedman, National Instruments senior product manager for the PXI platform and PXISA board member. “The addition of high-performance imaging to our PXI offerings enhances our mixed-signal capabilities for high-end test systems.”

The high throughput and low latency of the Camera Link standard make the frame grabber ideal for line-scan image sensors, which engineers can use for surface inspection of large areas, including finding esthetic and functional defects in solar panels and dead pixels in flat panel displays. The NI PXIe-1435 frame grabber also works well in many industrial applications, such as fault analysis using a stop trigger to record images before and after an event on the factory floor, and medical device applications such as analyzing intricacies in movement and recording stimulus response in objects from heart valves to eye corneas.

Engineers can program the new module using NI LabVIEW graphical development software and the NI Vision Development Module, a comprehensive library of imaging functions. They also can configure it using NI Vision Builder for Automated Inspection software, an easy-to-use, stand-alone package for fast development and simple maintenance. NI vision software helps engineers take advantage of hundreds of imaging processing algorithms, make decisions based on multiple inspection results, customize user interfaces and communicate results using I/O and industrial communication protocols.

Virginia Tech recently was named the overall winner of EcoCAR: The NeXt Challenge, a three-year collegiate vehicle engineering competition sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and General Motors (GM). The Virginia Tech Hybrid Electric Vehicle Team (HEVT) designed and built an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) that uses E85 (ethanol) and achieves fuel efficiency of 81.9 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent. With National Instruments reconfigurable software and hardware, the team used a graphical system design approach to design, prototype, validate and deploy a control strategy for the vehicle’s hybrid components.

To interface with and control the vehicle, the team chose NI CompactRIO, which acted as a hybrid vehicle supervisory controller that balanced power distribution between the vehicle’s combustion and electric systems. They programmed the controller with NI LabVIEW system design software, which also served as the runtime environment for the main driver display in the vehicle. The LabVIEW Statechart Module was used to create a high-level state machine control architecture for splitting torque between the hybrid components. Before deploying their control strategy to hardware, the team used NI VeriStand real-time testing software and NI PXI to create a hardware-in-the-loop simulation and validation system that evaluated the vehicle’s fuel and electric energy consumption and tested safety features.

“The members of the HEVT come from a variety of engineering backgrounds and concentrations, and it was critical for us to have an easy-to-use platform that could be used by everyone and from start to finish,” said Jesse Alley, graduate advisor for the Virginia Tech HEVT. “National Instruments software and hardware streamlined our vehicle development, allowing us to rapidly develop a sophisticated hybrid control strategy that ultimately helped us win EcoCAR.”

Sixteen North American universities participated in EcoCAR and re-engineered GM-donated vehicles to minimize fuel consumption and emissions while maintaining utility, safety and performance. The competition culminated in a trip to the GM Proving Ground in Milford, Mich., where the teams put their vehicles through a series of safety and technical tests. In addition to winning the overall competition, Virginia Tech won awards for Shortest 60-0 MPH Braking Distance, Best AVL Drive Quality, Best Dynamic Consumer Acceptability and Best Fuel Consumption. The team also received the National Instruments Most Innovative Use of Graphical System Design award. National Instruments is a platinum sponsor of EcoCAR.

Inmoco has extended its Exlar range of SLM brushless servomotors with a new, top-of-the-range 180mm frame size that offers users high levels of peak torque (69Nm) from the smallest package available. This performance is the result of T-LAM™ stator technology, which is employed across the SLM range, providing 35% to 70% more torque and higher efficiency than conventional high-speed brushless servomotors with equivalent frame sizes.

The SLM servomotors are a family of motion products designed to offer the OEM outstanding performance, quality and customisation possibilities. The excellent torque performance and efficiency provided by the motors is the result of a design harnessing the combination of high-density Neodymium iron boron magnets and the limited heat generation qualities inherent in the new T-LAM™ segmented stator design. In particular, the elimination of end turns in the stator, and the use of thermally conductive potting removes the parts most susceptible to failure in a traditional stator. The design also benefits from interface insulation against the high voltage and currents of today’s servo drives, and from Class 180 -H insulation that complies with UL requirements.

The SLM range covers five frame sizes; 60mm, 90mm, 115mm 142mm and 180mm; these units providing maximum continuous torque in the range from 1.69Nm to 69.10Nm at base speeds from 5,000rpm to 2,400rpm. The servomotors are of a rugged brushless construction, enabling them to withstand the rigours of the factory floor with minimum levels of maintenance. They also benefit from high levels of sealing, including epoxy-coated housings and IP65 ingress protection, for use in demanding environments.

The suitability of the SLM servomotors for OEM use is further enhanced by the convenient connection options available; MS connectors with embedded leads, or embedded leads with cable plugs, and by the feedback options, which enable the servomotors to be used with almost any commercially available servo amplifier.

A wide range of options, including special shafts, mountings, stators and housing materials are available to customise the SLM servomotors to meet specific OEM requirements. In addition, the servomotors can be supplied with an integral power-off brake. With power removed this locks the actuator shaft securing the external load.

The size and performance capabilities of the SLM units mean that they are ideally suited to challenging motion applications across a wide range of industries. The new Exlar K Series of linear actuators from INMOCO are designed to improve OEM competitiveness, with a range that offers multiple model types, enabling users to chose the option best suited to their application and budgetary requirements. Providing a truly universal solution for rod style actuator applications, the K Series actuators use Exlar’s patented roller screw technology, with its proven reliability and superior load carrying capacity, and allow the user the choice of multiple - and lower cost - motor technologies.

The price/performance ratio of the K Series electromechanical actuators means that they provide a clean, fast, simple and cost- effective replacement for hydraulic actuation, delivering a solution that offers superior life and performance. In addition, with dimensions consistent to those for ISO Metric pneumatic actuators, the K Series units also provide a simpler, longer- life alternative to pneumatic cylinders.

The K series is available with the option of multiple grades of planetary roller screws and with an option for an ACME screw for applications where backlash cannot be tolerated. The patented roller screw mechanism enables Exlar to provide some of the most reliable, long-lasting electro-mechanical actuators on the market. The design of the roller screws allows them to be accelerated and rotated faster than comparably sized ball screws, while their large contact area allows high force characteristics, and provides long life - typically 15 times that of comparably sized ball screws - even in the most demanding repetitive applications:

The robust design of the K Series actuator design ensures reliable performance in demanding applications. The actuators are enclosed in anodised aluminium housings that ensure excellent corrosion resistance and reliable operation in many arduous environments. They also benefit from main rods manufactured from nickel plated steel as standard, ensuring excellent wear characteristics from the actuators.

Last but not least in terms of environmental performance, the standard body design of the K Series provides an IP65 sealed housing and motor mount, (when allowed by the design of motor used). This allows the actuators to be used in applications where spray is present, without the requirement – and cost - of special options.

For applications not served by the standard K Series product design, Exlar offers a variety of special materials and coating options. The aluminium actuator body components of the K series actuator can be provided with alternative coatings such as Type III hard coat anodising, electro-less nickel plating, epoxy coating, or paint. In addition, the actuator main rod can be provided in stainless steel for greater corrosion resistance.

The K Series actuators provide users with complete flexibility in the type and style of motor to be mounted to the actuator. The user can select mounting provisions for brushless servo motors, stepper motors, DC brushed motors, and any other motor type that will fulfill the actuation requirements.

Complementing its adaptability to multiple motor types, the K Series offers what is probably the most flexible mounting system available with linear actuators today. The mounting options include: front and rear flange, rear clevis, rear eye, adjustable side trunnion, end angles, foot mount and inline Exlar servo motor with rear clevis.

The initial launch of the K Series actuator covers two models, the KM60 and KX60. The KM provides an economical planetary screw design unit, yet with superior performance to ball screw units. The KX delivers maximum thrust and life from its high performance planetary roller screw.

The new AquaTRUE™ series is part of the Micron® range of TRUE planetary gearheads all belonging to Thomson. These units are used in high precision motion control applications that require a high torque to volume ratio, high torsional stiffness, and low backlash. The DNA-DIO-462 and DNR-DIO-462 are 12 channel, electromechanical relay boards designed for use with UEI’s “Cube” and RACKtangle chassis respectively. Electronically, they are identical. Relays are in a Form C (SPDT) configuration and are rated for continuous operation at 2 A at 30 VDC, or 0.75 Amp at 125 VAC. Contacts are rated for 100 million operations. The board provides an on resistance of less than 200 milliohms and update rates up to 125 Hz.

The DIO-462 is part of UEI’s Guardian series. It not only controls the relay outputs, it provides a powerful output monitoring capability. An on-board A/D converter allows you to monitor DC output voltages (relative to the common terminal) and AC or DC output current. This allows the application to detect short and open circuits as well as other “suspicious behavior”. The monitoring capability is also a powerful diagnostic tool allowing a repair technician to quickly and accurately identify damaged, or mis-wired channels.

The Guardian advantage also includes programmable overcurrent protection. The user may select the overload current while the duration of overload required before the channel is shut down is one second. Each board provides 350 VDC isolation between channels, as well as between the board, cube and other installed I/O boards.

All connections are made through 37-pin D connectors ensuring mating cables or connectors are readily available. Users may also use the DNA-STP-37 screw terminal panel via DNA-CBL-37 or -37S series cables.

Each channel is configured as a standard Form C (SPDT) relay and switches voltages up to 100 VDC or 150 VAC. Each channel is rated for continuous operation at 2 Amps @ 30 VDC and 0.75 Amp at 125 VAC with an output voltage of less than 200 mV (<200 mOhm).

All relays default to “off” on power up/reset. Switching rates up to 125 Hz are supported. Each relay is protected by an on-board 2 Amp slow-blow fuse.

All connections are made through a convenient 37-pin D connector ensuring no problems obtaining mating cables or connectors. The DNA-AO-358 and DNR-AO-358 are 8 channel, strain gage simulators designed for use in UEI’s popular Cube and RACKTangle chassis respectively. The boards are based on actual variable resistors and will precisely duplicate the behavior of the gages simulated.

The boards are an ideal solution for simulator applications where an on-board system device is expecting an strain gage as an input. The boards are also an excellent solution for testing and diagnosing errors in a variety of strain gage based systems.

The boards support simulation of full, half and quarter bridge gages and are available in standard 120, 350 and 1 kOhm configurations. Other resistance values are available on a special order basis. The DNx-AO-358 series is compatible with both DC and AC excitations and offers AC throughput bandwidth greater than 250 kHz.

All connections are made through a convenient 62-pin D connector ensuring OEMs will have no problems obtaining mating cables or connectors. Hardide Coatings‟ ultra-hard tungsten carbide CVD coating has passed BS EN ISO 10497 fire-testing on several sizes of metal-seated ball valves designed and manufactured by Aberdeen-based EnerMech for corrosive and severe service applications. EnerMech LG Valves‟ 2” Class 1500 flanged RF gear operated valve underwent the ISO test which confirmed the pressure containing capability of the valve under pressure during and after the fire test. The body material was ASTM A350 LF2. Certification was awarded by Lloyd‟s Register and covers the EnerMech LG Valves range up to 4” 300 Class.

A sensor solution with no minimum shelf life, but offering maximum robustness, flexibility and simple operation – that is the LFP level sensor from SICK. It can transmit continuous level measurements and several limit values simultaneously. Demanding hygienic processes, aggressive detergents, high temperatures and process pressures – the LFP exploits its strengths in this application environment.

The sensor’s suitability for continuous media temperatures of up to 150°C and process pressures of up to 16 bar; its hygiene-compliant sensor design, suitable for industrial cleaning processes; its use of FDA-compliant materials; and its high enclosure rating of IP69K ensure that high cleaning temperatures, temperature shocks, pressure jet cleaning or chemical effects do not impair the resistance and tightness of the sensor – and thus guarantee lasting availability. The LFP, which is certified and approved according to EHEDG and FDA among others, is therefore suitable for applications in the primary packaging of liquid foods, for bottling plants, for use in cosmetic or pharmaceutical mixing plants, and for cleaning-in-place (CIP) or sterilization-in-place (SIP) equipment.

A precise and durable sensor solution

The LFP is used in process-related storage tanks and buffer containers in the immediate vicinity of packaging or filling lines. During both continuous measurement and limit level detection, the sensor impresses with its largely media-independent accuracy, reproducibility and resolution. This is achieved by a measurement process in which the time-of-flight of electromagnetic waves is detected by the device’s probe and evaluated. Another advantage of this measurement process: commissioning is possible without a medium calibration, and no recalibration is necessary during operation. As a result, liquids with differing physical properties (e.g. conductivity) can be packaged or filled without changing the sensor settings. Finally, the LFP impresses through its maintenance-free operation.

The LFP is a sustainable solution for a variety of reasons. As a result of the possibility of combining continuous level measurements with the detection of limit levels this 2-in-1 device concept eliminates the costs of a second system. The possibility of individual adaptation of the measurement path by simply shortening the probe is particularly economical, efficient and sustainable. Moreover, the LFP offers changeable, hygienic process connections. All these attributes offer producers of packaging machines maximum flexibility in the equipping of differently sized containers with just one sensor type.
