In recent years, there has been increased demand for more advanced functionality, even in micro PLCs with approximately 10 to 200 I/O points for use in small-scale control applications. Since 2006, CPU units for advanced micro PLCs, the CP1H CPU units and CP1L CPU units, have been added to the CP series.

There are also many manufacturers that give greater priority to cost efficiency and want to achieve the same functionality while reducing materials costs. This represents a major demand for price reduction. The CP1E CPU units released today can be used to build low-cost micro PLCs that respond to these demands.

Manufacturers that produce compact equipment place importance on keeping manufacturing costs down without spending an excessive amount of time on design and system implementation. The CP1E CPU units also respond to this demand by featuring simplified programming and wiring verification.

There are two types of CPU units: the low-cost, minimal functionality E-type basic CPU units, and the N-type application CPU units, which incorporate a serial port for connection with programmable terminals and a pulse I/O function for position control. The N-type CPU units can control compact devices efficiently.

Since the E5_N series was first introduced in 1998, the line-up has retained its fundamental strengths, while product features have evolved in response to the needs of our onsite customers. The series has achieved worldwide sales of three million units to date.

The E5_N series was developed around the concept of "onsite simplicity." It features easy model selection, operation and maintenance, which are crucial to achieving smooth onsite operations.

The E5GN features a display that reliably notifies the operator of current conditions, various functions that reduce the time required for settings and adjustments, reliable designs that reduce maintenance, and various services all aimed at ensuring simplicity in temperature control for all production sites.

The E5_N series comprises two functional variations: basic models that provide excellent cost/performance and general applicability, and advanced models for applications that require superior performance and functionality.

The E5GN released today is a basic model. Adopting the "onsite simplicity" concept of the series, its compact size of DIN 48 x 24 mm allows for flexibility in installation locations.

With the addition of the compact G size (DIN 48 x 24 mm), the E5—N series now provides a selection of four sizes, also including the A size (DIN 96 x 96 mm), E size (DIN 48 x 96 mm) and C size (DIN 48 x 48 mm), allowing customers to select the best model for the application site.

In recent years, the development of electric and hybrid vehicles in the automobile industry has been gathering steam to reduce carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions in order to implement measures for preventing global warming inspired by the Kyoto Protocol. These vehicles are equipped with many electric devices such as motors, batteries, and transformers. A sealing method using a high sealing quality liquid gasket has been widely used in the automobile industry to secure dustproof and waterproof properties. However, for electric devices, a much higher sealing performance is required to secure airproof properties to lessen the dangers inherent in such devices. Although OMRON has been proposing solutions for the glue inspection of liquid gaskets used in engines and transmissions, in order to meet the needs of more highly accurate glue inspection, we have consolidated our detection know-how and will release a glue bead inspection detection software as a product globally.

This software can be used by installation to the OMRON vision sensor flagship model FZ3 controller.

A leak inspection method is used in engines and transmissions following the injection of oil. This same method cannot be used in the liquid gasket inspection for electric device cases. As a result, sealing is secured by inspecting the glue status immediately after gluing. However, visual inspection alone has resulted in problems such as overlooking of gaps and non-quantification of inspections. Also, use of visual sensors for inspection has resulted in problems such as not been able to inspect glue width stably when the glue path is complex. To solve such problems, this software for glue bead inspection is equipped with OMRON's original automatic outline scanning function. It calculates the glue status with a high degree of accuracy even for complex glue paths by automatically scanning the glue outline, glue width, gap width and for wrong glue paths. Also, a more stable inspection can be performed by the execution of HDR (high dynamic range), an image processing tolerant to the use environment. By preparing a dedicated glue inspection interface and result display screens, we have made possible, easier inspection setting and error analyses with less man-hours spent.
