Weidmuller’s remarkable ESX10-T electronic circuit breaker range now provides precise circuit protection and security to 12VDC circuits. Approved for use in Zone 2 hazardous areas, ESX10-TC is designed to ensure selective disconnection of 12VDC load systems in both factory and process control applications. Features such as remote reset or on/off control and the capability to mount in a Zone 2 location provides users with enormous cost and time savings.

Weidmuller’s 12V models also protect a wider range of systems including battery-supplied circuits. Typical process applications are with remote, unmanned equipment where lightning or other transient voltage surges trip protection equipment, cause expensive and unwanted equipment downtime. The ESX10-TC remote control functionality can help get the system back into operation with minimal losses.

Weidmuller’s ESX10-TC uses active current limitation to respond much faster to overload or short circuit conditions than the switch-mode power supply. The precise and fast-acting tripping mechanism provides protection to the power supply and other circuits in a single load. With a width of only 12.5 mm, the new 12V models can snap onto symmetrical DIN-rails for easy installation and control cabinet space savings. The range also offers cross-connection busbars and an integral multi-color LED status indicator.



Weidmuller announces an addition to the Industrial Ethernet Portfolio with new serial to Ethernet converters. Providing a simple and reliable method for integrating serial port devices into industrial Ethernet networks, Weidmuller’s serial/Ethernet converters help maintain existing automation components while upgrading the overall infrastructure.

Weidmuller’s new converters include two ports, which are universally compatible with RS-232, RS-422 and RS-485, allowing virtually any serial terminal device to be connected. The Ethernet interface of the devices supports a broad spectrum of operation modes such as TCP Server, TCP Client, UDP, Real COM, RFC2217, Reverse Telnet, Pair Connection and Ethernet-Modem – designed-in versatility that guarantees network software compatibility. In addition the converter's user friendly web interface can be used to configure all of its functions.

Weidmuller’s serial/Ethernet converters feature an integrated relay output, which can be used to alert administrators when there are Ethernet problems or when there have been changes to the serial signals and current connections. This enables service technicians to react more quickly to emergencies. Two built-in Ethernet switch ports help reduce costs, as there is no need for an additional switch to daisy chain ports or extend the network via the Ethernet line.

Weidmuller’s serial/Ethernet converters are ideal for use in harsh industrial environments, and offer extended surge voltage protection for the serial connections, Ethernet ports and power supply. Robust screw-type terminal blocks ensure the power supply and serial connectors are reliably connected. Redundant DC power supply inputs (12-48 VDC) and low power consumption provide safety and reliability. Weidmuller introduces a new DC/DC Converter to the PRO-M Power Supplies product line optimized for machinery and offering a host of advantages. This new electrically isolated DC/DC Converter avoids critical earth loops; from an unregulated or distorted input voltage, it generates a stable, low-distortion output voltage. With class III protection the compact converter is ideal for use in earth-free power systems, such as the battery backup systems found in marine technology, as well as in oil and gas, machinery, and factory automation applications.

Weidmuller’s DC/DC Converter is a versatile solution for all 24 VDC power supply applications. It features industry leading power specifications, excellent resistance to shock and vibration, an extremely thin profile, over 91% efficiency, and a status signal for remote monitoring.

Weidmuller’s thin design, with a width of only 60mm, and the capability to be mounted side-by-side without clearance requirements saves space in the cabinet. The metal clip-on foot provides increased stability on the DIN-rail as well as high vibration and shock resistance.

Integrated features such as an alarm output, which monitors the status of the 24V output voltage, and an LED that indicates DC OK status for the output voltage, the integrated transistor outputs, and the on/off status of the relay contact, provide clearly visible visual aids making trouble shooting quick and easy thus optimizing machine up-time. Weidmuller’s DC/DC Converter is extensively protected with an internal fuse on the input side and on the output side with short-circuit and overload protection as well as a power boost at 24VDC of 12A for one minute.

In a move designed to consolidate an already extensive circuit protection offering, Weidmuller is introducing two new models of their all new connectPower brand of DIN rail mounted circuit breakers into the North American market – the BR Series UL 489 Branch rated, and the SU Series, which is UL 1077 approved for Supplementary protection.  The lever-operated breakers use thermal-magnetic technology, having ratings up to 277/480V and 60A in 1, 2 and 3 pole format, and are available immediately with C or D trip characteristics.  The ranges are targeted at industrial control applications, especially where the control equipment may be in an environment which needs to resist vibration and mechanical shock.

A compact 17.5mm width on the rail is part of an attractive construction package for the connectPower circuit breakers, which gives the user the convenience of either wire-end ferrules or ring lug terminations for the supply and load, as well as UL-approved bus-bar accessories to simplify and reduce the installation time. To maximize security and safety, the operating lever can be locked, off or on, and even the IP20 connections can be supplied with optional touch protection caps.


Weidmuller announces the launch of two new Gigabit Routers that have been developed specifically for use in industrial networking solutions. These are designed to offer secure and reliable communication between Ethernet-based systems as well as higher-level networks.

Weidmuller’s new routers provide the ability to communicate with machinery and systems with total peace of mind from anywhere in the world. TERMSERIES relays are installer friendly and reduce the risk of incorrect wiring with the help of color-coded markings designed to be legible in different mounting positions. Colors are marked on the top of the module with blue for DC coils, red for AC coils and white for AC/DC coils.

There has been public discussion about the Stuxnet computer malware and its impact on the operation of Vacon AC drives. This is why Vacon wants to clarify the situation.

Vacon has been investigating the matter and, according to its present knowledge, Stuxnet is not capable of infecting Vacon AC drives in any way. Nor does Vacon know of any instances where Stuxnet would have created problems in the operations of Vacon's customers.  In this respect the processes of Vacon's customers are not at risk.

According to experts, Stuxnet seems to be capable of infecting one manufacturer's certain programmable logic controllers (PLCs) which in turn can be used to control the operation of Vacon AC drives. An infected PLC may operate defectively and thus control the operation of Vacon AC drives in an unwanted manner. Therefore, customers who suspect that their processes might be infected by the Stuxnet malware should contact their PLC provider.

The malware is activated in the infected PLC when very specific conditions are all true at the same time, including an extremely high output frequency. Therefore, any possible effects would concern extremely limited and targeted AC drives application areas. Vacon's experts have not found in their own investigations a single potential case where all the conditions of the malware would be fulfilled.

In addition, because there has been incorrect or inaccurate information in some Internet-based sources regarding Vacon's sales of AC drives to Iran, Vacon wants to emphasize the fact that Vacon has not sold AC drives to Iran against the embargo.

Vacon takes this matter seriously and continues to study the potential impact of Stuxnet. Vacon will also keep its customers, partners and all other relevant stakeholders informed whenever new important information arises.



AC drive manufacturer Vacon will announce a new product family of compact AC drives at the electric automation fair SPS/IPC/DRIVES 2011 in Nuremberg, Germany on 22 November 2011. Optimized for the needs of original equipment manufacturers, the new product range further strengthens Vacon's foothold in this high-volume AC drive market.

Vacon will introduce three new products: Vacon 10, Vacon 20 and Vacon 20 Cold Plate. The existing Vacon 10, available in the power range of 0.25-5.5 kW, has a re-designed user interface and more functionality. The brand new Vacon 20, available from 0.25 to 18.5 kW, is a real workhorse which offers high performance and excellent tailorability. The new Vacon 20 Cold Plate, available from 0.75 to 7.5 kW, shares all the features of the Vacon 20. It is designed to allow OEMs to create the optimum cooling solution for the drive.

"Original equipment manufacturers are an important customer segment for Vacon's growth and success. In 2010, more than 25% of our sales came from this segment. The Vacon 20 series incorporates a built-in programmable logic (PLC) functionality which conforms to the IEC61131-3 standard. In addition, the functionality can be extended via optional modules such as a wide variety of fieldbus cards, and tools for easy parameter copying from one unit to another.

The global AC drive manufacturer Vacon announces the renewal of its entire Vacon NXP premium product range. The update involves improvements to both the air-cooled and liquid-cooled units in the complete power range from 0.55 kW to 5,300 kW. The Vacon NXP will maintain its strong position in Vacon's product portfolio and in the highly competitive AC drives market.

One of the most significant improvements concerns the control circuit boards, which have been significantly redesigned and conformally coated. Certain critical components have been replaced in order to increase their temperature sustainability. However, the range of functionality and compatibility of the circuit boards remain unchanged.

Varnished cards and option boards, which are provided as standard in the power modules above 72 A, improve protection against dust and moisture. Performance and durability have also been enhanced via improved cooling channels for optimal cooling and experience-based optimization of protection limits. In the air-cooled Vacon NXP, new fans improve the reliability of the drive, thus ensuring a longer lifetime. Thanks to the new cooling concept, fan efficiency has been improved by more than 50%.

In the liquid-cooled high-power modules, new options, such as an integrated brake chopper, have been implemented to minimize cabinet size and cost.

"The processor in the control card has also been changed, boosting calculation power by 15%. This benefits especially OEM customers who make their own software for applications," says Kurt Hofman, Product Marketing Director, Liquid Cooled Drives.

The Enhanced Vacon NXP range has been tested extensively, and HALT* (Highly Accelerated Life Test) tests have been carried out to assure excellent product performance.



Global AC drive manufacturer Vacon strengthens its position as an industry leader in the AC drives market with the announcement of three new products at the Vacon Drives Conference: VACON® 100, VACON® 100 X and VACON® 20 X. Global AC drive manufacturer Vacon is announcing the new VACON® 100 FLOW, an AC drive specially optimized for pump and fan applications, at the electric automation fair SPS IPC DRIVES 2012 in Nuremberg, Germany on 27 November 2012. The new AC drive offers versatile flow control for water & wastewater and building automation applications, further strengthening the wide range of the VACON 100 product family.

The VACON 100 FLOW is the newest member of Vacon's third-generation VACON 100 product family. Other products in the family include:

The global AC drives manufacturer Vacon has hit a milestone and will begin fully manufacturing the VACON® 100 AC Drives in the Chambersburg, PA facility. Prior to this, the components of the VACON 100 AC Drives were manufactured at the parent factory in Vaasa, Finland and then sent to Chambersburg's mini factory to be assembled and distributed to Vacon North America customers.

"Local manufacturing is an important prerequisite for success in the AC drives market in NA. It enables shorter delivery times and a quick customer response time for general support or in developing complex solutions for local customers," states Tom Doring, President, Vacon North America.

"Moving to the new factory in Chambersburg in 2009 has made it possible to extend the range of manufactured products and expand production capacity. The next major step was to start production of VACON 100 units in Chambersburg which we have begun to do now," Mr. Doring concludes.

The 66,998-sq.-ft. single-story factory in Chambersburg, PA was also awarded LEED® Gold Certification in 2010 as established by the U.S. Green Building Council and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI).
