Authoritative workplace health and safety guidance is now available to download free of charge from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Around 250 'HSG' and 'L' series publications that previously could only be purchased as printed documents can now be viewed or saved as PDFs, or printed on a desktop printer if preferred.

The publications cover the full range of the HSE’s health and safety advice and guidance, as well as approved codes of practice (ACOPs) and guidance on regulations.

Making the information available free of charge is intended to help employers gain a better understanding of their legal duties and what health and safety precautions they need to take - and also help safety representatives to maintain and improve health and safety in the workplace. Ultimately, the aim is to improve standards of health and safety.

Of course, users will also appreciate the savings available. For example, a printed copy of 'Safe use of work equipment. Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998. Approved Code of Practice and guidance' would cost £11.95, plus the administrative burden associated with raising a purchase order. But this publication can now be downloaded immediately, free of charge, with no registration process and no wait for the document to be delivered through the post.

Note, however, that although the publications are freely available, Crown copyright still applies, so organisations wishing to reproduce the information need an appropriate licence from the Office of Public Sector Information (OPSI). If preferred, the option remains to buy professionally produced 'hard copy' versions from HSE Books.

In addition to the free downloads from the HSE, don't forget that Procter Machine Guarding also publishes a number of free guidance documents and other utilities. These include: Guide to Machine Guarding Standards, Guide to Workshop Safety, Machine Risk Assessment Calculator, and Safety Distance Calculator. All of these and several others can be downloaded free of charge from the Free Machine Safety Guides  section of the website, while HSE guidance downloads are available from HSE Books.
