AVX Adds 85VDC Varistor To Transguard Series

AVX has expanded its multilayer Transguard Series to include an 85VDC rating in a 1210 case size. Designated the VC121085S151 Series, the cost-effective single-chip solution provides bidirectional transient voltage protection in the on-state and EMI/RFI attenuation in the off-state.

Equipped with sub-nS turn-on time, the 85VDC varistor can withstand multiple strikes and provides an excellent energy- and current-handling capability while protecting sensitive circuits from over-voltage conditions caused by electrostatic discharge, lightning, NEMP and inductive switching, according to the company.

The VC121085S151 Series devices have a peak current rating of 250A and are suitable for DC-to-DC converters on hybrid-electric vehicles; aftermarket automotive accessories, such as GPS and audio equipment; renewable-energy modules using a 48V bus, such as wind-powered chargers, solar panels and inverters; and commercial and military vehicles. Pricing ranges from USD0.08 (GBP0.05) to USD0.14 (GBP0.09) for standard commercial product, depending on volume, with a lead time of 12 weeks.

When selecting the proper fuse for short circuit protection in motor starting applications, it is important to not only ensure that the fuse will not nuisance open during motor start up times, but also that the fuse will coordinate as required with overload relays. When sizing fuses between 125% and 150% of the motor nameplate current, several advantages, including ease of coordination with an overload device, a smaller disconnect, and increased short circuit protection from a lower fuse rating, can be achieved.
