Vishay Intertechnology Releases Industry’s First Panel Potentiometer With Variable Resistor and Switch Included in Built-In Knob

Vishay Intertechnology Inc. (NYSE: VSH) today announced a new panel potentiometer that is the industry’s first to include a variable resistor and switch incorporated into a built-in knob. The P16S potentiometer is designed for military, professional audio, and industrial applications that require volume, speed, intensity, and voltage controls in a compact design − such as portable equipment, communication headsets, night-vision goggles, and cockpit panels.

Featuring a compact, fully sealed, and panel-sealed construction, the Vishay Sfernice potentiometer released today is a revolutionary concept in panel mounted potentiometers. Its unique design consists of a knob driving that incorporates a cermet or conductive plastic potentiometer. Only the mounting hardware and terminals are situated on the back side of the panel, which keeps the required clearance to a minimum and makes it ideal for small, low-profile, low-weight equipment.

The P16S offers a power rating to 1 W at + 40 °C and TCR of ± 150 ppm/°C typical, with high dielectric strength of 2.5 kVrms.

The device is available in 7 mm bushing length (15 mm inside equipment) with a 16 mm knob diameter, and offers a temperature range of - 40 °C to + 125 °C. It is RoHS-compliant and lead (Pb)-free.

A version of the new potentiometer with a conductive plastic element for audio applications, the P16S, is also available.

Samples of the new potentiometers are available now. Production quantities of the P16S NM with metal knob will be available in June 2012; production quantities of the P16S NP with plastic knob are available now. Lead times are 8 to 10 weeks for larger orders.
