Wika Offers Safety Values for Diaphragm Seals

Wika Instrument has announced that it now offers safety values for its diaphragm seals, allowing users to classify the reliability of individual components in the complete measuring assembly. This includes diaphragm seal, connection, and measuring instrument. The service is aimed at customers with safety-critical requirements - for example, in the chemical and petrochemical industries.

Wika has determined the values in collaboration with an external service provider. Using a Failure Modes, Effects and Diagnostic Analysis (FMEDA), the failure rates were calculated. These failure rates can be used by the operators for their own safety assessment in accordance with IEC 61508. Wika supplies diaphragm seals with various designs and special materials. This enables measuring instruments to be used even under harsh conditions.

When selecting the proper fuse for short circuit protection in motor starting applications, it is important to not only ensure that the fuse will not nuisance open during motor start up times, but also that the fuse will coordinate as required with overload relays. When sizing fuses between 125% and 150% of the motor nameplate current, several advantages, including ease of coordination with an overload device, a smaller disconnect, and increased short circuit protection from a lower fuse rating, can be achieved.
