Igus Cable Carriers Chosen for Gantry Cranes

After its festoon systems began to fail as a result of corrosion, a manufacturer of lifting equipment mainly used in paper mills decided to use Igus Energy Chain cable carriers on its gantry cranes. An Energy Chain system is mounted horizontally on each machine, where it guides and protects more than 75m of power cables. The cable carriers deliver a longer service life than the festoons in the dusty, humid environment found in paper mills.

As well as accommodating high ambient temperatures, which can peak at 50C, these are accompanied by up to 100 per cent humidity levels. Igus Energy Chains feature crossbars to facilitate access to the cables and can be opened using a screwdriver or by hand. In contrast to a festoon system, which allows the cables to move around in an uncontrolled way, the Energy Chain system offers excellent protection and stops the cables from moving around and catching onto other equipment or structures. This results in a reduction in downtime and also eliminates the corrosion problems associated with festoon rollers and trolleys.

Igus delivered the cable carriers as Readychains - pre-assembled, out-of-the-box systems complete with Energy Chain cable carriers, Igus Chainflex continuous-flex cables, connectors and other accessories. The Readychains saved the customer time and eliminated storage costs. Plastic Energy Chain cable carriers are said to be capable of long and short travel distances at high speeds in all orientations. They can be used in a variety of applications, ranging from machine tools and construction equipment to packaging machines, medical devices and clean-room applications.
