Magnetic Sensor Chip Suitable for Compassing Tasks

Inertial Aerosystems has introduced what it claims is the smallest commercial integrated magnetic sensor chip currently available, for applications such as compassing and magnetometry. Designated the HMC 5883L, it is manufactured by Honeywell Aerospace and is designed for low field magnetic sensing with a digital interface. Included are improved high-resolution magnetoresistive sensors with automatic degaussing (demagnetising) strap drivers, offset cancellation and a 12-bit ADC for high-resolution Earth fields sensing.

By using established anisotropic magnetoresistive (AWR) technology, this product features advanced precision in axis sensitivity and linearity while measuring both the direction and the magnitude of the Earth's magnetic fields. It is designed for low-voltage operations (2.16V to 3.6V) and low power consumption (100uA), and is compatible with battery-powered operations. The built-in strap-drive circuits provide demagnetisation of the sensor for each measurement, as well as offset compensation for consistent measurements of 1/2deg and a reduced need for calibration.

Optional extras include: a built self test, which is built into the internal ASIC that can be used to quickly verify sensors' full functionability without needing test equipment; sensitivity matching from different axes/sensors; and the ability to adjust sensitivity drift owing to temperature. It is designed for high-volume, cost-sensitive OEM designs and is compatible with high-speed SMT assembly.

It is available in tape-and-reel packaging and complies with current environmental standards. Demonstration and pin-out boards for product evaluation and development are available. Applications include auto-navigation systems, personal navigation devices, magnetometers and consumer electronics such as mobile phones. It measures 3 x 3 x 0.9mm.
