Transceivers Suit Harsh Operating Environments

Intersil has launched the ISL3247xE, ISL3248xE and ISL3249xE series of robust, fault-protected RS-485/RS-422 transceivers for applications in security/surveillance cameras and process control. The transceivers combine overvoltage protection (OVP), high electrostatic discharge (ESD) tolerance and wide common-mode range (CMR). The devices also feature low quiescent supply current and provide maximum transceiver performance with high reliability in harsh operating environment applications such as factory automation networks.

The ISL3247xE, ISL3248xE and ISL3249xE series are said to deliver a wide CMR compared with similar competitive RS485 devices. Driver outputs and receiver inputs are fault protected against voltages as high as +/- 60V and are protected against ESD events up to +/- 16.5kV, enhancing reliability in harsh environments. The devices have a quiescent supply current of 2.3mA, which is 30-50 per cent lower than competitive devices, according to Intersil. The ISL3249xE and ISL3248xE series combine both +/- 60V OVP and +/- 25V CMR, while the ISL3247xE is rated at +/-60V OVP and +/- 15V CMR.

The series provides designers with options including slew rate limited versions, high data rate versions and both half-duplex and full-duplex configurations. The products include full failsafe receiver inputs ensuring a logic high receiver output if the inputs are shorted, floating or on an idle bus, eliminating the need for bus-biasing resistors. A common installation error is swapping the cable data wires.

To address this, the ISL3248xE series includes a polarity reversal feature that can remotely correct this without requiring rewiring of the cable or the connector. The ISL3247xE, ISL3248xE and ISL3249xE series are available in a variety of packages including eight-pin and 14-pin SOIC and eight-pin MSOP packages. Pricing starts at USD1.40 (GBP0.85) each in 1,000-piece quantities.
