Softinway Arranges Free Axstream Webinar

Softinway has scheduled the next free webinar on the turbomachinery retrofitting techniques required to increase efficiency using Axstream. The webinar, entitled 'Retrofitting of Turbomachinery - from Scanned Data to a New Efficient Flow Path', will be held on 28 April at 10:00 and 16:00 EST. The Softinway team will present the full redesign process to the attendees, starting with analysing scanned data and determining profile characteristics, followed by the 1D/2D analysis of existing flowpaths, the evaluation and selection of sections that require redesign and, finally, the design of new and efficient airfoils.

New Axstream capabilities that support the redesign process include: the Axslice module, which analyses raw scanned data points and determines airfoil characteristics, saving time on one of the most time-consuming parts of the retrofitting process; and a completely redesigned preliminary design module that allows the engineer to optimise or redesign sections and modules while keeping the remaining flowpath without changes. The overall process is applicable to all types of turbomachinery. For illustration of the new technology, a steam turbine will be used that includes HP, IP and LP sections. The presentation will be followed by an open forum where Softinway's industry specialists will answer questions.

FUSE SIZING CONSIDERATIONS FOR HIGHER EFFICIENCY MOTORS

When selecting the proper fuse for short circuit protection in motor starting applications, it is important to not only ensure that the fuse will not nuisance open during motor start up times, but also that the fuse will coordinate as required with overload relays. When sizing fuses between 125% and 150% of the motor nameplate current, several advantages, including ease of coordination with an overload device, a smaller disconnect, and increased short circuit protection from a lower fuse rating, can be achieved. However, if sizing at this level prevents the motor from starting, it may then be necessary to increase the fuse ampere rating and it then becomes important to know the NEC sizing limitations.
