RPO Expands Plastic Optics and Optical Design Capability

RPO recently announced two exciting acquisitions, strengthening its position as a leader in the optics and photonics market. RPO recently announced the acquisition of Molded Plastic Optics (MPO), a leading designer and manufacturer of molded plastic optics for commercial and defense markets. MPO will become the Plastic Optics Division of RPO. With the latest automated mold presses, metrology and precision tool manufacturing available, the acquisition will enable RPO to offer customers extremely high precision and complex plastic optical technologies and system designs which incorporate polymer optics.

Another recent acquisition allows RPO to extend and grow its design and research services. Rochester based ASE Optics was formed in 1994 and has provided optical engineering services and research to over 200 different clients ranging from government agencies to Fortune 500 companies. The move will enhance RPO’s ability to solve complex optical problems and design and fabricate very complex optical systems.

FUSE SIZING CONSIDERATIONS FOR HIGHER EFFICIENCY MOTORS

When selecting the proper fuse for short circuit protection in motor starting applications, it is important to not only ensure that the fuse will not nuisance open during motor start up times, but also that the fuse will coordinate as required with overload relays. When sizing fuses between 125% and 150% of the motor nameplate current, several advantages, including ease of coordination with an overload device, a smaller disconnect, and increased short circuit protection from a lower fuse rating, can be achieved. However, if sizing at this level prevents the motor from starting, it may then be necessary to increase the fuse ampere rating and it then becomes important to know the NEC sizing limitations.
