NFET pre-driver with EEPROM configurability from Melexis reduces footprint & increases operating range for 3 phase BLDC motor control

3 phase brush-less DC (BLDC) motor applications bring higher efficiency and improved performance to electromechanical actuation in automotive systems like pumps, power steering, engine cooling fans and fast positioning drivetrain actuators. Melexis latest pre-driver IC, the MLX83203, deploys EEPROM memory and combined bootstrap and charge pump blocks. Whereas traditional BLDC pre-driver ICs require complex, large packages with many external components, the MLX83203 delivers a flexible pre-driver solution in a space saving, standard, QFN32 5x5 package.

The IC drives six 250 nC NFETS up to 25k Hz, while keeping 10 V gate voltage down to 7V battery voltage.. In line with the needs for such fail safe torque control applications, the MLX83203 features extensive diagnostics as well as a high speed, low noise amplifier. Rather than configuring the pre-driver by applying external resistors, 6 bytes of on-chip EEPROM offer wide-ranging configuration options while minimizing pin count.

The low self heating and small pin count means that the MLX83203 presents the smallest footprint for comparable 3 phase pre-drivers on the market. The benefit is a smaller finished size, fewer components and more flexibility for design re-use. Additional family members are planned for release in the coming months. The MLX83203 will be released for operation up to 150 °C and qualification to 175 °C is planned for the near future. Further members of this product family will support medium current capability and DC motor control.

The wide operating voltage range from 4.5 V to 28 V, plus bootstrap topology complemented with a charge pump stage, allow operating of the power stage via standard level NFETs without loss of performance during stop/start conditions, as well as enabling control even during engine cranking. The charge pump can be configured for applying a high side NFET reverse polarity protection. In sleep mode the IC consumes less than 30 µA standby current. A 10 MHz gain bandwidth product (GBW) delivers shunt amplifier settling times of less than 1µs for fast current feedback. Its gain can be programmed in a wide range from 8 up to 48, and the input range can be configured from fully symmetric to full scale. The power stage (VDS, VGS) as well as all input voltages are monitored with comparators to offer maximum system level diagnostics. A high speed serial interface provides detailed diagnostics feedback to the microcontroller.

Thanks to its wide configurability and high operating temperature, the pre-driver family, in addition to power steering systems, can be applied to engine cooling fans, blowers, water/oil/fuel pumps, drive train position actuators and wipers. The family will include 3 phase BLDC predrivers, as well as 2 phase predrivers for brushed DC applications. Package options include wettable flanks QFN, TQFP and TSSOP, all with exposed pad.

Production will be released in Q1 2013, and final samples are available through the standard Melexis sales channels.

IDEC Releases New Line of High Efficiency Power Supplies

IDEC Corporation announces the PS5R-V line of DIN-rail power supplies, offering their customers high-efficiency in a compact form factor at competitive prices. These power supplies suit a wide range of needs in the industrial marketplace, and carry all of the required certifications necessary for use in these demanding applications. This next generation of the industry standard PS5R power supply family has updated features and specifications to meet current and future needs. The PS5R-V line of power supplies includes 10W, 15W, 30W, 60W and 120W versions, with additional versions coming soon. These power supplies have a very compact form factor with overall dimensions reduced by up to 25% from previous generations. The reduced form factors combine with DIN-rail mounting to free up valuable control panel space and reduce installation costs. Operating temperature ranges up to -25 to +75 degrees C offer more versatility. These extended operating temperature ranges often allow these p

Banner Engineering DF-G3 Discrete Fiber Amplifier Features World-Class Long Range Sensing Capability

Banner Engineering introduces its DF-G3 discrete long-range fiber amplifier with dual digital displays for use with plastic and glass fiber optic assemblies. Featuring increased sensing power, the DF-G3 can sense more than 3 meters (10 ft.) with opposed mode fibers or more than 1 meter (3 ft.) with diffuse mode fibers. The extra power provides increased detection reliability for dark targets at long range and enhanced detection sensitivity when using specialty fiber assemblies for large area and small part detection applications. The DF-G3 is available with a single discrete output or two dual discrete outputs. The dual discrete outputs can be independently taught to trigger at different intensity values, which is ideal for correct part-in-place or error-proofing, bottle down, and edge guiding applications. “We developed the DF-G3 fiber amplifier to meet our customers’ need to precisely detect smaller targets at longer ranges” said Dennis Smith, Senior Marketing Manager, Banner E

TURCK is now offering the option to completely shield M8 picofast ® cordsets by connecting a braided shield directly to the coupling nut. This provides a cost-effective and reliable connection with 100 percent cable and connector shielding, which protects against electromagnetic and radio frequency interference. The 3 and 4-pin cordsets are available with flexlife ® PVC or PUR jacketed cable. All connectors deliver IEC IP 67 protection. The M8 picofast line, like most TURCK cordsets, provides male or female, straight and right angle connectors, standard and custom lengths, and pigtails or extensions. Fully encapsulated mating receptacles are also offered, completing the system.
