“HFE1600/2500 Series” Small Size and High Efficiency Front End Power Supplies

TDK-Lambda Corporation (President : Yoshiaki Hirota, Head Office : Nihonbashi, Chuoku, Tokyo), a group company of TDK Corporation, has developed the HFE1600/2500 series of small size and high efficiency front-end switching power supply. Order taking will commence on July 20, 2011.

The HFE1600/2500 series is a small size and high efficiency front-end power supply that can be installed in a 19" rack (1U height). It comes with 2 types (1600W and 2500W) each of which consists of 3 models (12V, 24V and 48V). The HFE1600/2500 series will be marketed for the industrial equipment and data communications markets under the brand of TDK-Lambda.

With the trend of ICs toward low voltage and high current, the power supply layout scheme in industrial equipment has changed in recent years. Method of supplying power is shifting from conventional centralized power system to distributed power system. A distributed system is composed of a front-end power unit and a back-end power unit. A front-end power unit needs to be of small, high efficiency and high capacity type.

In order to meet such requirements, we have developed the HFE 1600/2500 series of small size and high efficiency front-end power supplies. With the new series, the range of users' choices of power supplies for their specific applications has expanded. It features top class power density in the industry (improvement by more than 100% as compared with our previous models) and its compact size makes contributions to customers' requirement of reducing mounting space. It also features high power conversion efficiency of 92% (80 PLUS Gold level) for 1600W 48V output model and 93% (80 PLUS Platinum level) for 2500W 48V output model. Thus, it makes contributions to efforts toward realization of low-carbon society.

In addition, we make available (at option) a 19" shelf rack (1U height) to make construction of a high capacity power system easier. 5 units of HFE1600 or 4 units of HFE2500 can be installed in a single rack and 2 sets of racks can be connected in parallel to build a high capacity power system: 10 units of HFE1600: 15.2 kW (1600Wx10x95%) or 8 units of HFE2500: 19 kW (2500Wx8x95%). Furthermore, in order to meet a wide range of customer requirements, we have made optionally available a special model (/S type) equipped with the PMBus that can be controlled by external devices.
