FCI Develops High-Performance USB 3.0 Connector Technology, Supports 5 Gbps Data Rate

FCI, a leading manufacturer of connectors and interconnect systems, has released its new SuperSpeed USB 3.0 connector that provides a significant performance enhancement versus USB 2.0 connectors. The highly reliable SuperSpeed USB 3.0 connector minimizes user-wait time by supporting a 5 Gbps data rate and providing a faster sync time, which is a 10x performance increase versus USB 2.0 connectors. The SuperSpeed USB 3.0 connector is optimized for power efficiency and has the bandwidth and headroom required for Flash-based products and other emerging consumer and industrial data applications.

The SuperSpeed USB 3.0 connector is backward compatible with the USB 2.0 connector to minimize connector form factor variations and maintain the extensive driver infrastructure, while preserving customer and component expectations.

Combining high-speed data transfer with superior power management of mass storage devices, the SuperSpeed USB 3.0 connector improves rich-media device interaction in consumer electronics and audio/video applications.

“In new A/V technologies, Flash-based peripherals will require much higher data speed transfer rates, and the limitations of USB 2.0 connectors would prolong user wait times. The SuperSpeed USB 3.0 connector’s advanced performance characteristics are ideal for many applications that require energy-efficiency and high-speed handling,” said Kevin Cheng, Product Manager.

The durable USB 3.0 connector allows for up to 3,500 mating cycles and features added pins for faster USB signal and to support wave soldering applications. The USB 3.0 connectors are colored blue on the interior to distinguish them from USB 2.0 connectors.

The halogen-free, RoHS-compliant USB 3.0 connector is available in two receptacle styles, right-angle and vertical mounting. Copper alloy contacts with a steel back shell and high thermoplastic resin housing provide the connector with an operating temperature range of -55ºC to +85ºC.
