Kontron Launches Panel PC for Medical Industry

At the Medica 2010 trade show in Dusseldorf, Kontron announced the fanless Medi Client IIA, a compact and long-term available medical panel PC with 10.4in or 15in touch screen. It is specifically designed as a human machine interface (HMI) for medical appliances or as an all-in-one workstation equipped with medical device interfaces. The 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor N270 enables the medical panel PC to achieve higher performance and lower power consumption compared with the performance of previous processor versions.

With no rotating storage media, the fanless Kontron Medi Client IIA operates silently, so is suitable for use in surroundings close to patients. The Kontron Medi Client IIA has lightweight plastic housing with IP65 protection on the front, which is resistant to disinfectants and can be manufactured in customer-specific corporate designs. The EN60601-1 compliant medical panel PC is designed for continuous operation and has an MTBF of more than 40,000 hours. It is also insensitive to shock and vibration and is therefore suitable for mobile medical equipment.

For medical equipment OEMs, the five-year minimum long-term availability in identical configuration supports the product lifecycle of connected medical devices such as MRT, CRT or 3D ultrasound scanners and facilitates servicing, maintenance or replacement. Despite its compact size, the Kontron Medi Client offers a range of interfaces with two Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000), two USB 2.0 and one RS232 (optional RS422/RS485). The VESA mounting ensures the fanless Kontron Medi Client is easy to integrate into numerous medical applications for operation and emergency rooms, patient terminals and other risk-infection areas.

A touch interface provides good graphics in a space-saving, robust and hygienic design. With the integration of the 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, the Kontron Medi Client IIA offers lower heat dissipation and can be configured with up to 2GB of RAM. For data storage, the medical panel PC offers a socket for rugged Compact Flash media and, as an option, a 2.5in hard drive can be included. The bright (230cd/m) touch-screen display in 10.4in (800 x 600) or 15in (1,024 x 768) can be operated with gloves and stylus pens.

The housing (ABS UL94V0) is scratch, corrosion and chemical resistant, providing durability for easy cleaning and disinfecting. The CE-certified Kontron Medi Client IIA supports Windows XP Embedded, Windows CE and Embedded Linux, as well as numerous communication protocols such as HTTP, XML and RDP (remote desktop protocol).
