DSM Materials Suit Injection-Moulding Applications

DSM Engineering Plastics has introduced an additional five grades to its Ecopaxx range of bio-based, high-performance engineering plastics for high-tech applications. Ecopaxx is a polyamide (PA) 410 and belongs to the family of the long-chain polyamides. It pairs typical long-chain polyamide properties, such as low moisture absorption and chemical resistance, with high melting point and high crystallisation rate (typical for engineering plastics such as Akulon PA66 and Stanyl PA 46).

Ecopaxx is bio-based and has zero carbon footprint; 70 per cent of the polymer consists of building blocks derived from castor oil as a renewable resource. The five new grades of Ecopaxx have been developed especially for injection-moulding purposes. Ecopaxx Q150-D is a general-purpose, unfilled injection-moulding grade. Potential applications include castor wheels, household equipment and so on. Ecopaxx Q-HG6 and Q-HG10 are glass-reinforced (30 per cent and 50 per cent), heat-stabilised injection-moulding grades.

These materials can be used for all kind of applications where high stiffness and toughness are needed. These materials display high resistance against hot water/glycol, as well as hot oil and salt solutions (calcium chloride). The materials exhibit flow and mould temperatures of 80-90C. Potential applications include parts in automotive cooling circuits, sensors that are exposed to oils and salts, as well as structural parts that retain stiffness under moist conditions. Ecopaxx Q-HGM24 is a glass/mineral-reinforced injection-moulding grade, which is especially suited to the injection moulding of large parts that should have low warpage and excellent surface quality.

Because of its high melting point, the material can also be used at relatively high operating temperatures. Potential applications include automotive engine covers. In high-powered engines, generating a lot of heat, conventional materials such as PA6 or bio-based materials such as PA610 do not withstand the high peak temperatures, while materials such as PA66 often lack the superior surface quality.

For these applications, Ecopaxx Q-HGM24 can be used. Ecopaxx Q-KGS6 is a halogen-free, flame-retardant, glass-reinforced (30 per cent) compound (V-0 at 0.75mm). The material has a light colour, but can be coloured using the standard industrial RAL colours. Potential applications include connectors, circuit breakers and switch bodies.
