DC/DC Converter for Computing and Industrial Tasks

FDK has extended its DK series of non-isolated, point-of-load DC/DC converters with the addition of three models that operate from a 3.0VDC to 5.5VDC input bus for low-profile consumer applications. The small, low-profile single-in-line package (SIP) devices deliver up to 3, 4, and 6A of output current with efficiencies up to 94 per cent. They provide a tightly regulated programmable output voltage in the range of 0.8VDC to 3.465VDC. The 3A and 4A models deliver the full rated output current with no de-rating in ambient temperatures up to 85C and 75C respectively under natural convection.

The 6A converter delivers the full rated output current with no de-rating up to 60C with 400LFM (2m/s) airflow. FDK's 3A model FPDK05TR8003PSV and the 4A model FPDK05TR8004PSV are offered in a 0.394 (W) x 0.185in (D) (10.0 x 4.7mm) SIP package. The 6A model FPDK05TR8006PSV is offered in a 0.394 (W) x 0.220in (D) (10.0 x 5.6mm) SIP package. With a footprint of less than 0.08in2 (0.5m2) for the 3A and 4A models, and 0.09in2 (0.6cm2) for the 6A model, they provide space savings over discrete on-board solutions, according to FDK.

All models have a low height of 0.472in (12.0mm), making them particularly suitable for high-density racks, blade systems, and low-profile consumer applications with limited board-to-board and board-to-case clearances. The DK series converters provide complete power conversion solutions without the need for external input and output capacitors. They are true single input converters in that they do not require an external VCC (bias) supply for operation.

They feature programmable output voltage, remote on/off, over-current and over-temperature protection, and start up into a pre-biased output. They fit a range of telecommunications, data communications, computing, industrial, and consumer applications where board space, cost, profile, efficiency, and reliable operation in elevated-temperature environments are critical. All DK series products are RoHS compliant.
