Tiny Broadband Amplifier Counters IED Threats

Amplifier Technology has launched the 8780 - a tiny portable broadband amplifier for personal protection and to counter the threat of IEDs for all frequencies from 2.5 to 6GHz. The amplifier, which offers GaN technology, can be used to counter any threat from RF equipment, including mobile phones, 3.5G, 4G, Wimax and Radar, while the high power output enables it to operate across a wide geographic radius.

The 8780 measures 65 x 120 x 25mm and has a minimum power output of 25W, at which level its efficiency is at least 15 per cent or higher and its gain is 47dBm, yet the harmonic level is relatively low at less than -10dBc. The unit is specified with a maximum supply current of 4.5A, 28V at 25W. Amplifier Technology will supply the 8780 for own equipment manufacture, where it is most likely to be utilised in EW and counter-IED applications.

When selecting the proper fuse for short circuit protection in motor starting applications, it is important to not only ensure that the fuse will not nuisance open during motor start up times, but also that the fuse will coordinate as required with overload relays. When sizing fuses between 125% and 150% of the motor nameplate current, several advantages, including ease of coordination with an overload device, a smaller disconnect, and increased short circuit protection from a lower fuse rating, can be achieved.
