Cranfield Offers Soil Management Course

Cranfield's Soil Management course provides students with expertise in the management of soil in agricultural and rural land systems. It enables them to develop, evaluate and implement soil management solutions that will optimise economic productivity while protecting the environment and conserving biodiversity. The course comprises eight taught modules, an integrated group project and an individual thesis project.

The first week of the course comprises introductory lecture courses and an introduction to library and IT facilities. Modules: agricultural and environmental soil engineering; ecosystem services - living with environmental limits; GIS fundamentals; land engineering and water management; soil and watershed management; soil carbon, nutrients and contamination; soil plant environmental science; and soil policy and legislation. The group project will be on improving land-based ecosystem service delivery. Most of the individual thesis projects are externally sponsored and are carried out with an external organisation.

The place of study may be in the UK or abroad. The study is said to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to research independently, to think and work in an original way, to contribute to knowledge and to overcome genuine problems in land management. This course is accredited by the Institute of Agricultural Engineers (IAgrE) and the Society for the Environment and the Engineering Council. Facilities include the Cranfield University Experimental Farm, soil laboratories, soil lane and bin, and off-road dynamics facility.
