Ultracomp Material Performs On Colorado Railway

The maintenance manager of Pikes Peak Cog Railway in Colorado has utilised Ultracomp from Tristar Plastics throughout its railcar system. Tristar supplied several configurations of sleeve and thrust bearings to be installed within the brake caliper system. These bearings were put through a two-year test on the Colorado railway system, which included exposure to roadway ballast, snow, ice and rain during several hundred expeditions up and down Pikes Peak. Removal of the parts showed virtually no wear of the bearings and the shafts looked almost new, according to Tristar.

Ultracomp is used in sleeve, flange, thrust and sliding applications in areas such as couplers, emergency handbrakes, draft gears, brake caliper systems, shock absorbers and interior components throughout the railcars. Used on both transit and freight cars, Ultracomp exceeds the test requirements of the AAR and must perform for the equivalent of 1,000,000 miles of track time. Tristar said that Ultracomp has passed both of these requirements in many different applications.
