Conference Focuses On Nanotube Commercialisation

Applied Market Information has announced the Commercialising Nanotubes conference, which will be held at the Maritim hotel in Dusseldorf, Germany, on 8-11 March 2011. The event is said to coincide with an expansion in carbon nanotube (CNT) capacity. The focus of the event is firmly on the commercialisation of CNT technologies and taking them from the laboratory into real-world applications. Four suppliers at the forefront of this expansion will give presentations at the event: Arkema, Bayer Materialscience, CNano Technology, and Nanocyl.

The first commercial CNTs are already being used in the automotive, electrical and electronic, sporting goods, mass transport and marine industries, with many more applications under development in areas such as the renewable energy, medical and cable markets. One target market is enhancing the properties of polymers, for example, by increasing electrical and thermal conductivity as well as by boosting physical properties and flame retardancy. Plastics compounders including Polyone, RTP and Shinil will discuss how they are incorporating CNTs into thermoplastic compounds and masterbatches.

Other presentations will examine applications in thermosets for marine and windpower applications. The processors' perspective will be supplied by Kabelwerk Eupen and Promolding. The former will focus on using CNTs to improve the fire performance of cables, while the latter has studied how injection moulding parameters impact on the electrostatic discharge and electromagnetic shielding performance of CNT-based compounds.

In addition, companies from the US and Europe will discuss their work on using CNTs in electronics applications, including inks and transparent films for touch panels, LCD displays and e-paper. They include Unidym, Southwest Nanotechnologies and Thomas Swan. The investment and funding issues surrounding nanotechnology will be addressed by IP and business lawyers from Foley and Lardner. Key enabling technologies for the growth of the market include the synthesis and functionalisation of CNTs, and these topics will be covered by Cambridge Nanomaterials and Futurecarbon.
