SKF and Volvo to Develop Efficient Flywheel System

SKF has teamed up with the Volvo Car Corporation and Volvo Group to develop an economical and ecological flywheel system that could cut fuel costs by 20 per cent and, as a result, lower CO2 emissions.

The flywheel kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) was originally designed for use in Formula One, but now SKF is aiming to deliver critical components for flywheel systems to prepare this energy-saving flywheel technology for mass production. The KERS, based on a mechanical flywheel, has the potential to be more cost effective than electric hybrid systems at similar power ratings, according to SKF.
