Point-of-Load Regulator for Data Storage and More

Linear Technology has introduced the LTM4628 uModule regulator for use in applications such as data storage, routers, network switches, industrial automation, avionics and medical equipment. The LTM4628 contains two step-down 8A DC/DC converter circuits with the inductors, MOSFETs and other necessary components in a 15 x 15 x 4.32mm LGA package. The low thermal impedance of the LGA package and high operating efficiency enable full output power DC/DC conversion from 12VIN to 1VOUT at 70C ambient with no air flow, or 86C ambient with 200 linear feet per minute.

The LTM4628 is designed to convert supply voltages ranging from 4.5V to 26.5V to two lower output voltages ranging from 5.5V down to 0.6V with a total DC output error of +/-1.5 per cent including line and load regulation. Each output delivers up to 8A. The LTM4628's small PCB footprint and reduced design time provide a compact, low-height and quick-to-market point-of-load regulator solution, according to Linear Technology.

It has an internal clock for multiphase operation, which is beneficial for reducing the required bulk capacitance. In addition, the dual uModule regulator incorporates an on-board temperature diode, allowing users to monitor internal temperature. Tracking and margining capabilities simplify supply sequencing and voltage modification in complex systems where various voltage rails are required. The LTM4628 is rated for operation from -40C to +125C and priced at USD19.90 (GBP12.30) each in 1,000-piece quantities.
