CSSC-ESAB Shipbuilding & Offshore High Productivity Welding Seminar

ESAB, a world leader in the supply of consumables and equipment to the shipbuilding and offshore energy markets, recently teamed up with China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) Shanghai Shipbuilding Technology Research Institute to run a three-day seminar. The "CSSC-ESAB" Shipbuilding & Offshore High Productivity Welding Seminar was attended by more than 120 people from major shipyards, manufacturers serving the offshore energy industries, institutes and academic establishments from across China. Delegates learned out about the latest technologies from Europe, as well as ESAB's state-of-the-art welding and cutting processes, equipment and consumables.

Shipbuilding and the manufacture of offshore equipment is increasingly taking place in Asia. This fact, coupled with ESAB's established infrastructure in this region and its world-class technologies, placed ESAB China in the best possible position for presenting papers and leading discussions at the seminar.

Dr George Adam, COO of ESAB China, introduced the seminar and stressed that ESAB did not guarantee the lowest prices but was committed to providing products offering the highest value and safety. Later that day, Shaun Studholme, ESAB's Global Product Line Manager for Cored Wires and Backing Materials, gave a presentation that drew on ESAB Europe's wealth of experience and knowledge of welding consumables for shipbuilding and offshore engineering.

On the second day, a presentation by Alaaeldin A Assal, ESAB's Export Business Manager, covered the latest developments in automated and manual plasma gouging in the shipbuilding and offshore industry. This was followed by a case study that showed how submerged arc welding (SAW) can boost productivity, presented by Niclas Kilsberger, the Area Sales Manager for Arc Welding Engineering. Shi Renming, the Managing Director of ESAB's Malu Cutting Factory, then introduced ESAB's cutting technologies for the shipbuilding and offshore industries. The final presentation was by Armin Eichhozier, who introduced and demonstrated many products from ESAB's extensive range of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
For the third day of the seminar delegates were taken to the ESAB China Process Centre to see impressive demonstrations of plasma gouging and CTOD thick plate welding. After this, delegates were able to network while visiting local tourist attractions.

Feedback from delegates has been extremely upbeat, showing that the seminar fulfilled a need and provided very positive impressions of ESAB and its welding and cutting technologies for the shipbuilding and offshore industries. High praise has also been received from the CSSC Group and from delegates from its affiliated shipyards and offshore manufacturing businesses. The seminar will help delegates to raise productivity and quality by improving their welding and cutting processes. Indeed, the event was so successful that many delegates have requested more seminars to be organised on a regular basis.

In conclusion, Nazmi Adams, the Global Marketing Director for ESAB Holdings, comments: "To further support our customer segment approach, we placed our global offshore welding experience in Asia to be closest to our customers and strengthen co-operation. We recognised that the world is changing and we have to be present globally."
