Flir to Showcase Infrared Technology at Maintec

Flir Systems is to showcase its infrared camera hardware and application-specific analysis and reporting software, including the Flir P640 and P660 models, at Maintec 2011 on 29-31 March. The thermal sensitivity of the Flir P640 and P660 has been increased to meet the needs of expert thermographers. These cameras can now detect temperature differences as small as 0.03C, which equates to a thermal sensitivity of 30mK - a rating that is more common among infrared cameras used for research and development, according to Flir.

The benefit is that the thermographer can see the smallest thermal anomaly in electrical or mechanical installations. This enhancement also allows the infrared camera to be used effectively over a greater distance - useful for those involved in high-voltage applications. Flir's latest cameras also incorporate features such as IR window correction, which automatically adjusts the camera's sensitivity when inspecting high-voltage installation through safety IR windows.

Another feature is contrast optimisation, which automatically optimises the brightness and contrast of an image, making it easier to analyse detailed objects. Applications for a general-purpose infrared camera can now also include research and development tasks. This is possible as features that were previously only available on the most expensive cameras are beginning to be incorporated into less sophisticated models. For example, image streaming is now available in mid-range cameras.

This means, for example, the user can watch a process at start-up and acquire radiometric data at a reasonable speed. In other words, a predictive maintenance camera can also be used for some research tasks. Periodic storage is another example, Flir said. This allows snapshots to be taken at predetermined intervals, allowing the camera to act as a watchman for a variety of applications.
