Spirax Publishes Steam System Training Prospectus

Spirax Sarco's training prospectus enables customers to plan for steam system training and learn new skills to cut costs and improve the efficiency of steam plant operations. A new addition for 2011 is the Boiler Plant Regulations and Guidelines course (D8). This provides an overview of legislation, guidance and best practice for boiler operators, and helps users, or potential users, to understand their legal obligations.

With Spirax Sarco's Energy Savings course (E1), delegates learn about energy-saving opportunities in steam systems, how to estimate the energy requirements of a steam plant and how to calculate the payback period. Also included in the 2011 schedule is the Boiler Operation Accreditation Scheme (BOAS) Refresher course (D6AR).

A prerequisite for all BOAS-accredited personnel is to complete this refresher course every five years. The course will include the re-assessment examination and an oral interview. The 2011 training brochure details the full range of courses covering the latest legislation and aspects of the design, operation and maintenance of steam systems.

FUSE SIZING CONSIDERATIONS FOR HIGHER EFFICIENCY MOTORS

When selecting the proper fuse for short circuit protection in motor starting applications, it is important to not only ensure that the fuse will not nuisance open during motor start up times, but also that the fuse will coordinate as required with overload relays. When sizing fuses between 125% and 150% of the motor nameplate current, several advantages, including ease of coordination with an overload device, a smaller disconnect, and increased short circuit protection from a lower fuse rating, can be achieved.
