Pericom Expands High Speed Serial Connectivity Solutions for Latest CPU Chipsets

Pericom Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: PSEM), a leading supplier of high-speed connectivity, signal-conditioning and timing solutions, today announced continued production ramp, and expanded familes of USB 3.0, DisplayPort™ (DP)1.2, and PCI Express® (PCIe®) 3.0 products which support the latest generation of Intel based platforms.

The latest generation of computing and server chipsets have incorporated the newest high speed serial protocols such as USB 3.0 (5.0 Gbps), DisplayPort 1.2 (5.4 Gbps), and PCIe 3.0 (8.0 Gbps).

These new protocols will bring end user benefits such as DP 1.2 enabling 3840 x 2160 graphics resolution, USB 3.0 providing connectivity speeds over 10 times faster than existing USB 2.0, and PCI Express 3.0 almost doubles the bandwidth of key chipset I/O. However, the higher speeds of these new protolcols make it difficult to maintain signal integrity across platform PCB traces and cables. Pericom’s ReDrivers provide signal conditioning to enable these high speed signals to meet industry standards compliance.

In this latest of a continuing series of product releases focused on supporting the newest chipsets for DT/NB/TAB and server/storage/embedded platforms, Pericom announces the expansion and updating of its USB 3.0 ReDriver™ signal integrity and PCIe 3.0 signal switch product families, as well as the production release of its DisplayPort1.2 ReDriver™ . Pericom will demonstrate and display these new devices at the Intel Developer Forum, China National Convention Center, April 12-13, 2012.

“We are seeing good deployment success for our new USB 3.0, DP 1.2, and PCIe 3.0 products by our top tier customers as they begin to ramp up their latest generation computing platforms,” said Alex Hui, Pericom, president and CEO. “We continue to work closely with major chipset vendors, such as Intel, to make sure our customers are getting maximum benefit from our serial connectivity solutions.”

The combined DT/NB/NetB/TAB market is forecasted to grow 22% to 519 million units by 2013, according to a Feb, 2011 IDC report, with over 50% of this volume capable of being addressed by Pericom’s new multi-product USB 3.0, DP 1.2, and PCIe 3.0 signal switch families.

The updated USB 3.0 ReDriver product family includes single and dual port, and single channel versions offering full standards compliance to USB-IF standards in normal operating mode, and industry lowest power in active, standby, slumber, and unplug modes. No external clock source is required, and they all offer versatile user programmable equalization (EQ), emphasis, and output swing. The USB 3.0 single channel product offers industry smallest footprint at 3 x 3mm TQFN for consumer and computing applications.

The new DP 1.2 ReDriver product supports up to 5.4Gbps across 4 lanes for a total bandwidth of 17.28Gbps, offers automatic power management including auto power down for unused lanes, auto EQ adjustment, auto data-rate selection (1.62Gbps, 2.7Gbps, 5.4Gbps), full support for Aux link training, and is offered in a space saving 7x7mm TQFN package.

The 2 new additions to the PCIe 3.0 8Gbp/s signal switch family are optimized for single lane applications such as mobile computing, and offer 1 lane (2 channel) 1:2 mux/demux capability, available in both flow-through and foldback pinouts for optimizing PCB layout. Both products offer extremely low insertion loss and lane skew, and are offered in space saving 2.5 x 4.5mm TQFN packages. The family already includes 2 lane versions popluar in server, storage, networking and embedded applications.
