High-Side Power Switch For Harsh Environments

International Rectifier (IR) has introduced a high-side power switch with a fully integrated bootstrap function for fast actuator applications such as fuel magnetic injectors and braking valves. The AUIPS7221R 65V power switch delivers a high frequency of 100kHz and a high current capability up to 25A, making it suitable for harsh 12V or 24V environments. The device integrates a charge pump for full DC operation and features over-current and over-temperature shutdown to provide safe operation and protection under repetitive short-circuit conditions.

Designing high-current and high-frequency protected switches using the AUIPS7221R integrated solution reduces PCB constraints and increases the performance of the entire system, according to the company. Fuel injection is claimed to be more efficient, reducing both consumption and contamination. The AUIPS7221R also features a diagnostic function and low current consumption in sleep mode. The device is qualified according to AEC-Q100 standards, features an environmentally friendly, lead-free and RoHS-compliant bill of materials and is part of IR's automotive-quality initiative targeting zero defects.

When selecting the proper fuse for short circuit protection in motor starting applications, it is important to not only ensure that the fuse will not nuisance open during motor start up times, but also that the fuse will coordinate as required with overload relays. When sizing fuses between 125% and 150% of the motor nameplate current, several advantages, including ease of coordination with an overload device, a smaller disconnect, and increased short circuit protection from a lower fuse rating, can be achieved.
