Seminar Gives IEC61511 Lifecycle Overview

Emerson Process Management is offering a seminar to provide a concise overview of the IEC61511 lifecycle for Safety Instrumented Systems (SISs). The company aims to provide practical guidance in the procedural, documentation and management requirements for implementing safety systems, based on project experience. There will be three main sessions to the seminar, as follows: 09.00-09.30 registration; 09:30-10:20 session 1 - standards and functional safety management; 10:20-10:35 coffee break; 10:35-12:15 session 2 - analysis and implementation; 12:15-13:00 lunch break and discussion; 13:00-14:00 session 3 - maintaining safety during operation phase.

Session 1 - standards and functional safety management - starts with a review of the standards and legislation that are relevant to functional safety, explaining that IEC61511 is the primary standard of interest in the process industry. The seminar will then look at the requirements within those standards for the management of functional safety, including competency, functional safety assessments and audits. Session 2 - analysis and implementation - looks at the analysis phase, considering hazard identification techniques, safety integrity level allocation, safety function identification and the Safety Requirements Specification.

The seminar will then consider a number of issues within the implementation phase, including safety function design and equipment selection, modelling and SIL verification, SIS design and implementation, and finally installation, commissioning and SIS validation. Session 3 - maintaining safety during operation phase - looks at the most important issues for end users, concerning what needs to be done during the operation and maintenance phase of the lifecycle. Topics include planning a working strategy for maintaining safety, proof testing and inspection, plus a review of SIS performance and demand rates versus design assumptions.

Modifications, upgrades and expansions will also be touched on The first round of seminars will be held in the following locations: 6 July 2010 - Inchyra Grange Hotel, Grangemouth; 7 July 2010 - Carmelite Hotel, Aberdeen; 13 July 2010 - Catch Centre, Grimsby; 14 July 2010 - Emerson Process Management, Middlesbrough; 15 July 2010 - Emerson Process Management, Stockport. The Aberdeen seminar programme will be 30min later, with registration at 09:30-10:00 and seminar start at 10:00.
