FTIR Analyser Determines Water In Lubricating Oil

The Ferrybridge Power Station in West Yorkshire has selected A2's Ipal portable FTIR analyser to measure the level of water in the lubricating oil used in its massive turbines. A new article entitled 'Ipal FTIR analyser for moisture determination in lubricating oils - an advancement over Karl Fisher titration' by Richard Wilson, environmental and performance manager at Ferrybridge, outlines a number of reasons why the plant has adopted the technology.

The article states that speed, ease and accuracy of measurement is significantly improved with the onsite FTIR analyser and that no reagents are required. The FTIR system acts as a check on offsite testing lab measurements that are made when necessary. The training of operators is said to be easier to accomplish with the FTIR analyser, as compared with the Karl Fischer technology.
