Card Connector Suits Compact Device Applications

Alps Electric has launched the SCDB3A02, a three-in-one combine-type connector for applications in notebooks, PDAs, home audio/visual equipment and other devices. The connector allows the use of SD memory card, multimedia card and memory stick in a single slot. The surface-mountable connector is available as standard mount type. It features compact dimensions of 29.5 x 30.4 x 4.2mm and an ejection stroke of 6.5mm for the storage media.

For enhanced user-friendliness, the combine-type connector is realised as push-push type, which allows easy handling through manual insertion and removal of the memory cards. Thereby the SCDB3A02 guarantees an operating life of 10,000 insertion/removal cycles for SD memory cards and 12,000 cycles for memory sticks. The connector has a detection switch in sliding contact structure that can detect if a card has been inserted or not, ensuring high reliability.

Further technical specifications are a maximum initial contact resistance of 100mohm at the connector contacts and 500mohm at the detection switch, an insulation resistance of up to 1,000mohm and a voltage proof of 500VAC per minute. The connector's operating temperature ranges from -25C to +60C.

The three-in-one combine-type connector is RoHS compliant and is available in minimum packaging units of 300 pieces. The high degree of miniaturisation of the connector was achieved through the use of Alps Electric's thin body-forming and precision moulding technologies. Because of its low-profile design, the company said the card connector will increase design freedom for set makers, contributing to their efforts to produce thinner, more compact devices.
