LECTOR 620: Reliable Identification and Tracking of Products in All Packaging Processes

The new series of 1D and 2D code readers from SICK is called LECTOR®620. The image-processing sensors impress with their compact and industry-oriented design, reliable reading performance, rapid integration in a variety of packaging machine IT environments, and extensive analysis and diagnostic possibilities. Their intuitive operation is very user-friendly and ensures maximum flexibility, functional reliability and availability. The code readers are used in plants for primary, secondary and final packaging. They identify the packaging of food, beverages, pharmaceutical and cosmetic articles, as well as non-food goods of all types, ensuring complete product control and tracking.

Packaging labeled with bar codes or 2D codes carries information that can be read by machines so that packaging processes can be controlled and products tracked. Whether primary or final packaging, outer packaging or palleted goods – the codes must be reliably detected, identified and checked for readability, completeness, and plausibility whatever the packaging level. Whereby machine constructors and end-users make maximum demands of reading performance, functional reliability and availability, as well as easy operation and maintenance – all demands that the LECTOR®620 code readers meet.

The series was developed in collaboration with a range of packaging machine producers and their end-customers. Clever, simple, industrial are the keywords describing the various sector requirements implemented in the image-processing LECTOR®620 code readers. This can immediately be seen from the device variants available – aligned on the differing demands of producers and users. The LECTOR®620 eco offers the basic functions for reading and assessing codes. The Standard version meets the reading and automation requirements of the most varied of applications in packaging machines.

Clever: concept. Very good reading performance with all common 1D and 2D codes is achieved because the LECTOR®620 records the codes at a frequency of 60 Hz and – unlike other code readers – uses all images for evaluation, guaranteeing hitherto impossible decoding performance. For continuous packaging processes, the LECTOR®  can also autonomously adjust reading parameters such as brightness or contrast settings. The device thus automatically adapts to varying code qualities, for example, so that there are no non-identifiable packaging units.

Simple: operation. Laser points in the centre of the image support alignment of the code readers on the area of the packaging in which the codes are located. A variety of modes, from Standard to Expert, then offer an appropriate amount of configuration possibilities. At its easiest, AutoSetup (i.e. the automatic teach-in process) is started at the press of a button on the device. Parameterization by means of software is also possible, and is supported by the live picture displayed in the user interface and by dialog-guided enquiries. LEDs on the device provide information on the focal distance and reading quality of the taught-in codes.

Industrial: integration. Housing slots and slot nuts with variable hole distances on the ultra-compact and robust metal housings, as well as the rotating M12 plug unit, ensure flexible, reliable and rapid mounting in the packaging equipment. Ethernet TCP/IP, FTP, Ethernet IP, Profinet, CAN, RS 232/422/485, USB, digital I/Os – the LECTOR®620 series offers all options for rapid and open integration of the code reader in your particular IT environment.

Efficient: maintenance and diagnosis. LECTOR®620 devices offer efficient maintenance and diagnostic possibilities. Up to 100,000 pictures on the code reader’s microSD card and stored evaluations of code quality allow producers and users themselves to solve and easily understand any problems on packaging equipment.

LECTOR®620 – the innovative platform for reading and inspecting 1D and 2D codes in a packaging context.
