Hamamatsu Sensor Suits High-Volume Applications
Hamamatsu Photonics is offering a new photo IC - the S11067-01CT angle sensor - suitable for applications such as automotive steering angle sensors and tilt detectors in digital cameras. The high-performance sensor, which directly processes absolute angle information into digital data, is also suitable for various encoders. An encoder can be made using a rotating plate with a semicircular slit in conjunction with an LED and the S11067-01CT.
Light from the LED passes through the slit, illuminating the 720 fan-shaped elements of the circular photodiode array. The digital data is output serially to provide absolute angle information. The S11067-01CT has a high angular resolution of 0.25deg. The SMD package measures 4.5 x 4.5 x 1.6mm, creating a small footprint. Hamamatsu Photonics said this, as well as the low cost of the sensor, makes it suitable for high-volume applications. The S11067-01CT has failsafe and sleep functions included.
