Mayr Introduces Vertical-Axis Braking Solution

Mayr Power Transmissions has unveiled the Robaa-topstopa, a fully sealed drive-side-mounted safety brake suitable for any vertical- or gravity-loaded axis. Designed to meet the demands of EN ISO13849-1, the compact and lightweight Robaa-topstopa can be retrofitted to existing servo systems to prevent uncontrolled vertical movements in a power-off or emergency-stop situation.

The Robaa-topstopa is available as a single- or double-circuit brake with either a shaft output to connect to a gearbox or an integrated plug-in coupling to enable connection directly to a ballscrew. Available in three standard sizes ranging from 12Nm to 170Nm, the Robaa-topstopa is said to offer safe and reliable braking even with the motor removed. With a housing sealed to IP54 and flanges that can be adapted to any application, the Robaa-topstopa provides a simple, safe and economical vertical-axis braking solution, according to the company.

When selecting the proper fuse for short circuit protection in motor starting applications, it is important to not only ensure that the fuse will not nuisance open during motor start up times, but also that the fuse will coordinate as required with overload relays. When sizing fuses between 125% and 150% of the motor nameplate current, several advantages, including ease of coordination with an overload device, a smaller disconnect, and increased short circuit protection from a lower fuse rating, can be achieved.
