Safe Control Solution for Stage Technology

The automation system PSS 4000 with the new rotary encoder PSENenco.

Today's stage technology uses complex control technology. It's essential to monitor stage elements that are constantly in motion, for example. The control system PSSuniversal PLC and the new dual-channel standard rotary encoder PSENenco are used for this purpose. Stage hoist applications can be safely monitored in the automation system PSS 4000, for instance.

The following safety functions are performed:
  • Position of the hoist is safely detected
  • Speed is measured and monitored
The total solution (PSSuniversal PLC, standard rotary encoder PSENenco and PAS4000 software blocks) is standard-compliant in accordance with SIL CL 3 and PL e.

When selecting the proper fuse for short circuit protection in motor starting applications, it is important to not only ensure that the fuse will not nuisance open during motor start up times, but also that the fuse will coordinate as required with overload relays. When sizing fuses between 125% and 150% of the motor nameplate current, several advantages, including ease of coordination with an overload device, a smaller disconnect, and increased short circuit protection from a lower fuse rating, can be achieved.
