NEW: Probe Z-Nano for Tool Setting and Broken Tool Detection

Compact Tool Setting Probe, Precise and Economic – Blum-Novotest is introducing their new probe Z-Nano

Blum-Novotest, leading suppliers of innovative, high-quality measuring and testing technology are presenting their new probe Z-Nano. This extremely compact tool measuring system is used in CNC machining centres for automatic tool length measurement and breakage detection as well as for temperature compensation in one machine axis. The new Z-Nano is the further development of an approved system known under the identical name and available already for many years.

Mr. Weiland, Sales Engineer at Blum-Novotest, explains: “We are sure that we will have the same success with this new Z-Nano as we had with the previous version which is used and approved every day all over the world. With the further development of this system we could realize some improvements. One of these improvements is an exchangeable measuring surface which allows worn measuring surfaces to be replaced a new one. Another improvement is the additional adjustment possibility by a spheric disk which enables easy adjustment on the machine table.”

The principle of linear guide was brought to perfection by the engineers of Blum-Novotest. Instead of the previously used sliding guide the new Z-Nano is working with a ball guideway by which the measuring force could be reduced once more. The advantage is that now even smaller tools starting from diameter 0.1mm – depending on tool geometry and material – can be measured. Furthermore the probe in its standard version is impressive by its high repeatability of 0.5 µm 2σ. For special applications it is also available in ‚High Precision’ design with a guaranteed repeatability of 0.2 µm 2σ.

As all other tactile systems by Blum the Z-Nano is complying with protection class IP68 and is working with an optoelectronic measuring mechanism. During measuring the trigger signal is generated by shading of a miniature light barrier inside the probe. This guarantees an absolutely wear-free probe with constant reliability even after millions of operation cycles. The switching status is indicated via LED which allows easy control of operation.

There were many reasons for the success of the previous probe and these can be applied to the new design, e.g. the system identifies a broken tool which avoids further damage of the workpiece or machine tool. If the tap drill breaks during threading and the following tap has a collision the consequences are often essential damages on the machine and maybe on an expensive workpiece. With the new Z-Nano such errors will be eliminated.

The Z-Nano can be mounted in vertical as well as in horizontal orientations. Practically proven and optimized measuring cycles for all common control types are included in the delivery program. Especially for the production of large series a time-optimized software is available which enables fast tool breakage detection within 1-2 seconds. Accessories offered by Blum are different mounting sockets, e.g. with nozzle to clean the measuring surface and the tool. Also available is a mechanical chip protection, e.g. for horizontal mounting.

„The probe is delivered with a highly flexible connecting cable and 1.5m of steel mesh. If installation with cable is not possible, e.g. in machines with pallet changer, the probe is also available without cable and IR transmission” Weiland says.
