NEXT GENERATION OF MINIATURE LOW-COST, HIGH RESOLUTION OPTICAL ENCODERS WITH INTEGRAL CONNECTOR INTERFACE

Duncan Electronics, a division of BEI Technologies, Inc., has developed a new compact optical incremental encoder based on their reliable Opto-ASIC technology. The new device features an integral 5 pin mating connector that mates with both AMPHENOL and MOLEX standard configurations. This combination allows designers greater flexibility in integrating a very high resolution, complete encoder solution into an extremely small package, ready for "plug 'n play" installation.

The 920 Series offers one of the industry’s smallest optical disc-reading caliper configurations, capable of accepting disc radii as small as 9.78mm with resolutions up to 2450 PPR (Pulses Per Revolution). This Opto-ASIC technology allows the unit to be very tolerant to mounting alignment issues, enabling them to be installed without tight tolerance constraints. This is important when considering the added costs of time-consuming alignment issues during assembly.

Phased-Array Opto-ASIC Technology Advantages
The combined advantages of highly miniaturized packaging and the success of Duncan's Opto-ASIC design, a phased array photo diode IC noted for its high tolerance to axial movement (+/- 0.010") and low power consumption (50mA max.), the 920 offers a leveraged value in its use in a myriad of new and emerging applications, including security systems, meter control and automation applications. This range of Opto-ASIC chips offers 5-volt TTL-compatible dual channel quadrature output with index options.

New Integrated Connector, Reduced Footprint
Designed to further reduce assembly time and lower interfacing costs, the 920 Series is featured with an integral 5-pin connector that mates with industry standard AMPHENOL and MOLEX connector configurations. The unit's overall footprint is only 1.25" x 1.05" x 0.39" (31.75mm x 26.67 x 9.9mm), including caliper, connector and PCB mounting board. The 920 can be specified for SMT or conventional fastener mounted installations.

Standard stainless steel code disks are available in a broad range of standard radii, with standard resolutions starting at 90 PPR (0.365"/9.78mm radii) and ranging up to 2540 PPR (requiring a .920"/23.37mm optical radius). This family of disks can also accommodate shaft diameters from 0.125" to 1.0". Not all resolutions are available in each diameter. BEI Duncan Electronics also offers a lower cost photographic film code disk capable of operation at 105 C and resolutions up to 2540 PPR.

"This new generation encoder offers high performance with very small space needs, where to the design engineer these attributes are rarely this compatible" stated John Pindroh, BEI Duncan Sales Manager. He further stated, "The joint efforts between core customers and our engineering group enabled us to balance these constraints, resulting in greater product flexibility and lower unit pricing."
