Communications Module for Read-Only Stations

Balluff has introduced the RFID Easy Loop Communications module, a low-cost system suitable for multiple read-only stations in conveying and pallet-tracking applications. A simply configured bus protocol allows up to 16 Balluff BIS processor units to report their data cyclically to a host system. In the Easy Loop system, both supply voltage and data are sent over a standard read head cable for simplified connection.

The maximum extension length for each channel is 80m. All processors work independently of each other, allowing flexible operation. The data can also be read from a data carrier on-the-fly in many applications as it passes by the read head; making stopping to read the data unnecessary. The optional communications module converts the RS-422 processor interface into a single common RS-232 or Ethernet TCP/IP interface channel.

The module can also be located between the processors and the host system, providing galvanic isolation between the supply voltage and the processors for greater operating security. Since no bus settings are necessary, removing or adding processors is a simple task, after which the system is ready to use again.

When selecting the proper fuse for short circuit protection in motor starting applications, it is important to not only ensure that the fuse will not nuisance open during motor start up times, but also that the fuse will coordinate as required with overload relays.
