BEMF Unit Ensures Safe Machinery Access

Castell has developed the BEMF unit to provide fast, safe access to rotating machinery. This unit monitors the motor and will only allow access to the machinery once the motor has stopped rotating. This is said to be more efficient than a timed system as it enables entry at the moment the motor stops rather than a defined safe period, which has to be set in excess of the maximum period the motor could be rotating for.

While the motor is running a key remains trapped, this is only released when the machinery is safe. This key is then used to gain access to the dangerous area through use of a Salus or an AI access lock.

FUSE SIZING CONSIDERATIONS FOR HIGHER EFFICIENCY MOTORS

When selecting the proper fuse for short circuit protection in motor starting applications, it is important to not only ensure that the fuse will not nuisance open during motor start up times, but also that the fuse will coordinate as required with overload relays. When sizing fuses between 125% and 150% of the motor nameplate current, several advantages, including ease of coordination with an overload device, a smaller disconnect, and increased short circuit protection from a lower fuse rating, can be achieved.
