Saelig Introduces New Economical All-in-one Ethernet Module

WIZ820io is a new plug-in network module that offloads Internet tasks to a mini-board that includes WIZnet’s popular W5200 IC (TCP/IP hardwired chip + PHY), a mag-jack (RJ45 with transformer) and other peripheral logic. Housed in a very small form factor (23mm x 25mm) with two rows of 0.1”-spaced pins, WIZ820io can be used as a ready-made component for Internet-enabling a product or board, and is an ideal solution for users who want to develop networked systems rapidly.

WIZ820io contains WIZnet’s hardwired Ethernet stack IC W5200, which supports 8 independent sockets simultaneously, and features a high-speed SPI interface, power-down mode, and Wake-On-LAN function.  WIZ820io handles TCP, UDP, IP, ARP, ICMP, IGMP, PPPoE, and MAC protocols.

WIZ820io operates at temperatures from -40 ~ +85deg C on 3.3V/120mA, but is 5V tolerant. The module supports half / full duplex operation, auto-negotiation and auto cross-over detection.

Off-loading the burden of the TCP/IP stack into a second peripheral chip (complete with Ethernet MAC) can minimize product debug issues and reduce time-to-market with TCP/IP stack problems avoided.  It also offers the additional benefit of a more stable product, with no possibility of stack overflows. Detailed knowledge of TCP/IP is not needed.  Simple 8-bit micros immediately have much more power since they no longer have the burden of TCP/IP protocols. TCP-offload improves overall system performance, reduces cost, power, and size.
