Thermal Imaging Detects Material Failure in Bikes

Carl Messtechnik is using Flir thermal-imaging cameras to conduct pulse thermography quality tests to detect stress-induced defects in bikes made from carbon-fibre-reinforced materials. The way that carbon-fibre frames behave in the case of damage and failure is fundamentally different from traditional metal frame bikes.

Instead of bending, carbon-fibre-reinforced materials just break and this potentially exposes riders to failures that may lead to injury. The details of this application are detailed in a new application report available from Flir's website.
