MOSFETS Suitable for Voltage Regulator Modules

NXP Semiconductors has announced the availability of 15 new devices in the Nextpower range of 25V and 30V MOSFETs in its LFPAK package. The latest additions to the company's power MOSFET portfolio are said to deliver balanced characteristics across six important parameters for high-performance, high-reliability switching applications. They also provide a low RDS(on) with sub-1mohm types in both 25V and 30V.

While traditional approaches focus primarily on reducing RDS(on) and Qg, NXP Nextpower uses superjunction technology to optimise the balance between low RDS(on), low Qoss, low Qg(tot) and Qgd for strong switching performance and reduced losses between output drain and source terminals, as well as superior SOA performance. In addition, NXP LFPAK delivers rugged power switching in a 5 x 6mm footprint. Key applications include synchronous buck regulators, DC/DC conversion, voltage regulator modules and power OR-ing.

When selecting the proper fuse for short circuit protection in motor starting applications, it is important to not only ensure that the fuse will not nuisance open during motor start up times, but also that the fuse will coordinate as required with overload relays. When sizing fuses between 125% and 150% of the motor nameplate current, several advantages, including ease of coordination with an overload device, a smaller disconnect, and increased short circuit protection from a lower fuse rating, can be achieved.
