Small SMPS Capacitors Resist Shock and Vibration

AVX has expanded its switch-mode power supply (SMPS) capacitors series, Turbocap, to include miniature versions that are suitable for DC/DC converters, hybrid vehicles and medical equipment. The miniature Turbocap series may also be used in military/COTS Plus power supplies, industrial equipment, telecom and alternate energy applications. The devices feature a double-stacked construction of vertically and horizontally stacked capacitors to provide high CV values, low ESR values, high current-carrying capacity and excellent high frequency performance.

They are designed to be rugged and mechanically robust. The miniature Turbocap Series capacitors are available in an X7R dielectric and feature a voltage range of 50 to 100V with a capacitance value of 100uf. The expanded Turbocap series capacitors are assembled using AVX's lead-frame technology, which places the ceramic up off the board and reduces cracking issues, as well as susceptibility to shock and vibrations.

FUSE SIZING CONSIDERATIONS FOR HIGHER EFFICIENCY MOTORS

When selecting the proper fuse for short circuit protection in motor starting applications, it is important to not only ensure that the fuse will not nuisance open during motor start up times, but also that the fuse will coordinate as required with overload relays. When sizing fuses between 125% and 150% of the motor nameplate current, several advantages, including ease of coordination with an overload device, a smaller disconnect, and increased short circuit protection from a lower fuse rating, can be achieved.
