Coriolis Flowmeter for Pipeline Custody Tasks

Endress and Hauser has introduced the Promass 83X/84X four-tube Coriolis mass flowmeter, which is suitable for pipeline custody transfer and other high-flow-rate applications. The 14in-diameter Promass 83X/84X, which will be showcased at the Offshore Technology Conference in Texas on 2-5 May 2011, is suited to the measurement of mass flow, density and temperature of oil, gas and other fluids in large pipes at rates up to 4,100 tons/hr. The 83X model comes standard with fully traceable 0.1 per cent flow accuracy, and optionally with a flow accuracy of 0.05 per cent.

The 84X model is suitable for custody transfer applications and features MID (OIML R117) and PTB approvals. For both models, accuracy of the density measurement is 0.01g/cm3 (0.001g/cm3 optional), while accuracy of the temperature measurement is 0.5C. Both the 83X and 84X models have a balanced measuring system with immunity to external pipe vibrations and process influences. Both models work in applications with entrained air. The 316L stainless steel construction of the Promass X flowmeters makes the instruments suitable for on- or offshore applications. The flowmeters are available with 12, 14 and 16in flanges, accommodating most large pipelines.

Endress and Hauser said the instrument replaces conventional flow measurement devices in pipelines with a flowmeter that is more stable and has a lower pressure drop. The flowmeter's advanced diagnostics are said to help minimise maintenance costs. The 14in size of the Promass 83X/84X means it can be used for custody transfer, fiscal metering and other high-required-accuracy applications of gases and fluids. These applications can include pipelines and transfers to and from tanker ships, trucks, and railroad cars. The four-tube flowmeter features secondary containment for increased process safety.

This means it is suitable for applications involving toxic or hazardous liquids or gases. The flowmeter has no moving parts, so maintenance is minimised. It operates in process temperatures of -50C to +180C and in process pressures up to 1,440lb/in2. Communication options include 4-20mA, Hart, Profibus DP/PA, Foundation Fieldbus or Modbus. The flowmeters have a NEMA 4X/IP 67 rating and Atex, FM, CSA and IECEx approvals. The Promass 83X/84X fulfils EMC requirements according to IEC/EN 61326 and Namur NE21. It conforms to the requirements of the European Union and ACMA directives.
