USB Modules Target Harsh Test Environments

Data Translation has launched the DT9853 series of USB bus-powered digital-to-analogue modules, which are optimised for use in harsh environments. The DT9853 series is fully isolated to +/-300V and provides voltage, as well as the industrial-standard 0 to 20mA current outputs, concurrently. They operate as high-speed USB devices for maximum speed and accuracy. The DT9853 Series is ideal for process-control, control-loop and test applications requiring stable and accurate output signals. The plug-and-play installation of these USB modules is said to simplify configuration and reduce set-up time, while offering good isolation and accuracy.

Features: fully isolated to +/-300V for improved signal accuracy and safety; four or eight analogue outputs with 16-bit resolution for accurate measurements; 16 dedicated digital I/O lines for dedicated external event synchronisation; interrupt on change support ideal for monitoring and controlling critical signals; output ranges of 0-10V, +/-10V and 0-20 mA offer maximum flexibility; scalable design for easy connection of high-channel-count applications; 32-bit counter/timer for counting external events; compact rugged enclosure for easy setup and configuration; calibration utility provides easy-to-use analogue output circuitry tuning.

All DT9853 series modules are provided with the Omni CD, which offers a variety of software tools and libraries. Other ready-to-measure software programs for test and measurement, including the graphical application program Measure Foundry, are available.

FUSE SIZING CONSIDERATIONS FOR HIGHER EFFICIENCY MOTORS

When selecting the proper fuse for short circuit protection in motor starting applications, it is important to not only ensure that the fuse will not nuisance open during motor start up times, but also that the fuse will coordinate as required with overload relays. When sizing fuses between 125% and 150% of the motor nameplate current, several advantages, including ease of coordination with an overload device, a smaller disconnect, and increased short circuit protection from a lower fuse rating, can be achieved.
