Panton McLeod Repairs Water Supply Valve
Panton McLeod has carried out an asset maintenance project for United Utilities following the discovery of a problem involving a 36in (91cm) valve in an underground chamber in Merseyside. A large valve had seized in the closed position during some routine maintenance; this problem was likely to affect water supplies to thousands of people in the Wirral. The Panton McLeod team fitted temporary valves half a mile apart to isolate the stretch and make the major supply pipe safe to work on.
Repair crews excavated a series of 9m-deep trenches to get access to the broken valve. Other crews from United Utilities were involved in providing booster pumps and organising a series of super tanker deliveries to ensure thousands of homes and businesses were kept in supply during the operation. The Panton McLeod team dechlorinated the 1.4 million litres of water from the damaged section of pipe so that it could be discharged safely to a local water course.
The discharge had to be carefully phased and meticulously measured and monitored to satisfy the Environmental Agency that it would not damage the delicate environmental balance. Once the repair was completed, the affected section had to be carefully flushed and refilled to ensure that the drinking water passing through it met stringent water quality standards.
